So crushed...

The paper that I worked on for YEARS just got rejected from the journal last night. I'm numb. I'm finding it so hard to move on and finish my thesis when I can work so hard and not get anything back. I don't know what to do. I'd hate to leave school after 6 years without my PhD, I really would. But I don't know if I have it in me anymore. The paper doesn't change anything, it just makes me so sick of all this crap.Chat Icon

Re: So crushed...

that is indeed a horrible feeling. I spent 18 months working on my mater's thesis and 1 week befire graduation my advisor told me it was unaceptable. I re-did almost the whole paper (160 typed pages) in 1 week, I feel your pain, hang int here, don;t give up. Who rejected your paper, a committee or an individual person?Chat Icon

My cousin was told 1 month before graduation her thesis wasn't acceptable. But, she redid it - got it approved and has since graduated.

Hard to not get down about it, but don't give up! You'll get through it!

Chat Icon Did they give you any comments? Maybe it's a small fix--I had the same thing happen, and it turned out the preferred I use a different kind of statistical analysis, which was a relatively easy fix.

Oh no! Chat Icon

It's flat out rejected, or just deemed unacceptable until you do experiments A and B?

Can you make some minor changes and submit it elsewhere?

I know how you hate your current situation already -- I'm sure this doesn't help. Chat Icon

totally and utterly rejected Chat Icon i'm going to try to change it and submit to a MUCH lower journal, perhaps the lowest one out there that is still peer reviewed.

Send it elsewhere! Unless you're doing a postdoc in academia, people will only look at the # of pubs you have, not where they were published. And maybe not even that -- I don't even bother to list my pubs on my resume.

I'm so sorry. Don't give up! Just because this journal didn't want to publish your work doesn't mean another one won't. Chat Icon Could you maybe get some tips from a professor or advisor?

That's not necessarily true...I know for college teaching jobs, they definitely look at the quality of the publications, not just the quantity.

But you have plenty of time to resubmit, and by the time you finish your research you'll probably have many more ideas for articles!

Does your advisor have any comments on why it may have been rejected? I had my advisor proof several of my articles...I threw her name on as co-author, but it was worth it to get her advice.

Oh yeah, that was a major generalization Chat Icon but based partly on my understanding of Beth's future career goals.

It's not the same exact thing, but there was some error in my registration when I did my bacc. thesis. Byu the time it was all straightened out they told me it was too late to register for it after the fact. And since part of my thesis was performance and in the interim we got a new dean who had not seen the first one, I couldn't submit my paper and work from the first one, I had to do ANOTHER thesis, which consisted of researching, planning, casting, directing and mounting another full stage production and doing all of the paperwork and writing. And I had gotten an A on the first thesis. I honestly wanted to just give up the same as you, but I had worked too hard to let anything stand in my way, and so have you. Just keep going. It will be worthwhile when it's all over.
