So furious with peds office
So this is only sorta flu shot related, but only bc it happened to be what I was talking to the ped about, and its their practice made that me so mad.
I asked if they recommend the swine flu vaccination and this is the answer I get....."well we arent recommending it, but we're not not recommending it either"
I was like well do you think the benefits outweigh the risks....."we're not recommending it one way or another"
So I say "so technically then by default youre not recommeding it"
They say "I didnt say that, its really your decision to make"
Im so ****** and not over the shot itself but bc the only people who are medically qualifiednto give me medical advice in regards to DC WONT bc they are more worried about protecting their own ***. How in gods name is a parent supposed to make an informed decision on ANY medical topic if they need to CYA more than they need to advise their patients. Im so furious! Isnt that what a doctor is for?????? WTH kind of answer/advice is that. Would you be ****** if on any topic you needed medical advice on your Dr was like sorry, we dont give medical advice on that topic, youre on your own?

They should be wiling and able to discuss information about the shot but I do think it is okay for them not to have a conclusion. I guess I am saying that if they do not want to have a conclusion, they should be discussing pros and cons in more detail.

I agree
Maybe if you went in person and talked to the Dr her/himself?

Re: So furious with peds office
I would ask if they are or are planning on stocking the swine flu vaccine. If they are not, well then there is your answer. My ped gave out the info from the CDC and said he is only getting the shots when specially requested by the parents and so far he has not ordered any shots b/c no one is requesting them. He is really pro vaccine so I was surprised to hear that.

Re: So furious with peds office
My ped said that he would go over the pros/cons. Which he did.
And then at the end, he said ' .. and that being said, I chose NOT to give the H1N1 vaccine to my daughter, you must make the decision yourself, I can't tell you she should/should not get it.'
I think they have a responsibility to give you the information.. positive and negative, but it's our job as parents to choose if our children should ultimately get it or not. I take what our Ped says very strongly, so him saying he wont give it to his DD spoke volumes to me personally. Do research, ask other medical professionals. You have the right to be informed and no one should make you feel otherwise.

Re: So furious with peds office
At my OB's office, one of my drs. told me almost the same thing. He said he personally hadn't done enough research to recommend it or not. All he could do was tell me what the CDC said. 2 weeks later I saw a different dr. in the same practice and he said he was absolutely recommending it. I would have thought that would remain consistent across the board. It's so confusing!

Re: So furious with peds office
I think the problem comes from this. If they recommend the vaccine and someone has a terrible reaction from it...they get sued. If they don't recommend the vaccine and someone contracts the H1N1 vaccine and dies...they get sued. Its a lose lose situation for medical professionals.

They have done this to me too. I always ask the nurse, ped, etc at my office... "Well, then have you been giving it to your OWN children?"...
I found out the nurse at my Ped's office gives her own children the flu shot, but will be declining the H1N1 for them. My Ped gives his own children all the vaccines as scheduled. I don't always listen to their plan (ie, I won't be giving DS the flu shot) but it helps to know what a Medical Professional would do!!!!

Peds. are not able to order the swine flu vaccine the way they order other vaccines. The vaccines are being sent to them based on what the CDC thinks they will need. My ped. has called several times and was told he will not be getting the vaccine until the end of November, if that.
To the OP, my ped. is not a fan of the swine flu vaccine and doesnt even want to get it for himself, let alone his 3 yr. old daughter. That being said, if a parent asks for it he has to provide it and give his recommendation based on the AAP and CDC recommendations. I think alot of dr's are taking a no opinion approach b/c they dont know if the vaccine is safe and dont want parents to blame them later on.
