So has anyone heard about the possiblility of a year round school year?
Not in the near future but somewhere down the road Someone mentioned this to me today..an older teacher...We would work three months and then have off one month and so on!

I know some places in North Carolina do this. My cousin is a teacher there and was telling me about it. I haven't heard anything about it here. I hope not. I like my summers off!

I teach in a school district in NC where some of the elementary schools are year-round. Believe it or not, I'm SERIOUSLY considering going this route next year. Overall, in speaking with their teachers, they are WAYYYYY less stressed, because every six weeks, they get 2 weeks off! Plus, they still get about 5 weeks off for the summer, before they go back again.
All in all, I think it's a winning situation for everyone involved: the kids are mostly avoiding the "summer slump", and the teachers are getting more time off dispersed throughout the year.

I think NYC would see about 95% of their staff quit!

Re: So has anyone heard about the possiblility of a year round school year?
My friend went from YR to traditional calendar and HATES TC.
I'm considering YR school for next year. My colleague who move to YR this year absolutely loves the schedule so far. She just had 2 weeks off. And living away from family, she now gets to spend more time with them. Plus, you can take vacations during off peak times.
The only reason I'm hesitant is that all the YR schools in my area are all very high need and I think that would be a difficult transition for me.
I honestly think it's a great idea. All the reasons for the TC are obsolete in most areas now.

If that happened, I'd DEFINITELY change careers!!!!!!! The one thing that keeps me going back every year is knowing I'll have the whole summer off.

I just moved to CA and had the option of doing a YR school this year -- the only reason I chose not to is because my best friend is getting married this summer and I want to come back to NY to help her finish up all the last minute details. YR is actually not too bad...
You're actually off the whole month of August, have a week off for Thanksgiving, have 4 weeks off for Christmas, and 3.5 weeks off for Spring Break, then you'd end on July 20th and have off until school started again in September.
Click here for the master calendar
This is for San Diego though.. I'm not sure how the NY schools would work!

Re: So has anyone heard about the possiblility of a year round school year?
I have to read more about it - but my gut instinct would be to love it!! You still get off a bulk in the summer, but the rest of the year - you work a few months, have a month off! Heck, I would love that! I was in heaven when this school year started and we had a bunch of 3-day work weeks.
For me - after awhile the summer break gets to be too much - I would rather have the time off broken up around the year.
I would think heat issues would stop it from being practical, though. You would need to equip a lot of classrooms with a/c.

Re: So has anyone heard about the possiblility of a year round school year?
LI schools would have to provide AC for classrooms which would cost too much. Additionally, the "back to school" profits would plummet

I don't necessarily think that's true - I think that people are still going to think of Sept as the new school year - esp if they still have a month off before that - and buy new clothes, supplies, etc.
As someone mentioned earlier, don't ever think it would happen in NY because of the summer camp market

Re: So has anyone heard about the possiblility of a year round school year?
The district I taught in here in California considered going YR several times - it always ended up being a funding issue, and our budget passed, so it didn't happen.
Their idea was that it costs less to teach more kids if you go YR, because you can have different classes on different "tracks" all going to school in the same facility at different times. I wasn't crazy about the idea at all because as a teacher, it meant you had to share your classroom - pack everything up before vacation, because someone else will be teaching in there while you're on break.
If it was a decision based solely on what's best educationally (not what's best for the administrators' budget), and it was JUST a calendar change, not a sharing the classrooms change, it'd be okay.

Re: So has anyone heard about the possiblility of a year round school year?
I would be really disappointed if we went to year round because I like to travel during the summer. Last summer DH and I spent 6 weeks in Hawaii. In Hawaii they have year round school. Maybe in a few years once I have children myself I wouldn't mind as much but right now I NEED my summers please!
