So how long do you think it will take for my new addition to settle in?

As many of you know, we adopted a 6 year old German Shepard last night. I feel like we have new born baby here. DH and I were up ALL night with her...pacing, whining, scratching at doors. I hope this doesnt go on too long.
Any ideas or suggestions to get her accustomed to her new home?
And how long should I expect to be up all night (this is jsut perfect as my 2 year old is finally sleeping through the nightChat Icon )?

How did you first introduce him to the house?? Take him on a very long walk so you can bond and drain his anxious energy.. Where did he come from?? Is he used to a kennel or a crate? You may need to get one so he feels safe..

We tried to have our new little guy in our bedroom the first couple of nights. Same deal - pacing and licking and just generally not getting any sleep.

We put him in the crate and he went right to sleep, through the night. We decided to leave him be for a while and are actually ready to try again to get him to sleep in our bedroom.

It took mine a good 2 weeks to fully settle into our house and it's quirks. All the noises, or abscence of noises, smells, routines, neighbor's dogs barking, all that stuff.

He's probably pretty anxious about his new situation, nothing is familiar yet, not even you or your other dog. Give him some time, he'll be fine. In the meantime, I'd suggest a crate if you don't already have one, for a feeling of security. I got mine for about $130. from Pet Supplies Plus.

She has settled in beautifully! She found a comfy spot in my den to sleep. She is been absolutely amazing with my boys and my other dog. I'm just so happy she's here! She really is a terrific dog. I went out this morning and bought her a new bed. I'm not sure if she'll use it but either way, she seems pretty content to be here.Chat Icon
