So, I fell two weeks ago and broke my big toe nail...
I didn't realize that the break was almost to the bed because the nails were not polished. Then I went to the nail salon and they fixed it with silk wrapping. I stubbed it in the middle of the night and now the entire nail is barely hanging on.
I have bandaids holding it down. It really hurts! Do I go to the foot dr? Will he just rip it off? How is the toe without the nail? Does it hurt?
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
TIA

Re: So, I fell two weeks ago and broke my big toe nail...
I have had my pointer finger's nail ripped off before so I know what pain you are in. My nail eventually fell off from the root, and at that point, the tissue underneath the nail was no longer hurting, buts it a weird feeling, hard to explain. My nail grew back normal. I didn't go to the doctor at all, I soaked my finger in betadine and peroxide so it didn't get infected, the nail fell off on its own. If you feel better by going to the foot doctor, you should go. I used to work for one, it won't hurt to go it you want.
Hope you feel better soon!

I had this happen. Once the nail was off it was pain free. Either rip it off, or get it done. You'll be better off.

Re: So, I fell two weeks ago and broke my big toe nail...
This happened to me once. I was walking on the sidewalk and didn't see that they were uneven and slammed my big toe into the concrete! The nail on the big toe eventually fell off without any pain and took about 9 months to grow back a complete new nail. Lucky for me I did the damage in October so it literally had the whole fall/winter/spring to grow back.
I am sure you will be fine but if you can I would go to a foot doc just to have it checked out.

that happened to me when I ran a 5 mile race in running shoes that were a little too small on me. The nail on my big toe was barely hanging on and the doctor took it off. It looked a little odd without the nail there, but it grew back fairly quickly.

If you don't want to rip it off you could just cut it down far enough so that it doesn't get caught on anything. Then eventually you can just cut if off.
I hit my big toe on the track of the sliding glass doors of my shower and saw stars! OMG it was a horrible pain. Once I cut the nail down it hurt less and with time it will hurt less. The nail grew back just fine but it did take a while.

Re: So, I fell two weeks ago and broke my big toe nail...
This happened to me in August. I stepped the wrong way and there was a bump in the sidewalk and up went my big toenail. It was still attached and barely hanging on. I was able to push it down and the blood and skin left over kind of made it reattach.
But it HURT. A LOT. After a few days I went to the podiatrist and got it taken off. You should see a doctor b/c he told me that sometimes the nail doesnt attach correctly and then you get more problems. Months later and it has almost grown back.
I feel your pain! It really hurts!
ETA- It is pain free after you get it taken off and it does look a little strange for a few months, but it wont hurt.
