So I gave DS gerber puffs today for the first time...
He ate them because I fed them to him but he couldn't feed himself though. He'd pick them up and couldn't master getting it in his mouth. So he dropped it and then would pick it up again and drop. He made a game out of it. At 8 1/2 shouldn't he be feeding himself these things?

Not without practice. It takes time to acquire those skills. Keep giving them to him.

It took DS a week or two before he could do it on his own....he still fights to get them in his mouth sometimes.

They need to learn to use thier pincer grasp. Give him things to practice with on his tray. My DD got the hang of it about 8-9 months old.

it took hannah about a week or so to get the idea of the puffs, but now she is a pro at picking one up and putting it in her mouth. you just have to practice. we practiced it after every meal. i would give her some puffs as "dessert." :)

DD just got the hang of this about a week ago, just let him keep practicing, even now she still drops 50% of her food on her lap. Give him time

At least he'll eat them...I can't get my son to even open his mouth for one! He'll pick it up with his fingers and play with them, but eating them is another story. And he's almost 10 months.

Mine will eat them if I feed them to him. But if not then he just picks them up and drops them and just plays with them.
In fact he's doing that right now...

Re: So I gave DS gerber puffs today for the first time...
I started those with Ethan yesterday too! He's 7 mos. He grabs it off the tray so it winds up in his fist and then he puts his whole hand in his mouth but doesn't know enough to open his hand. It was pretty funny. For some reason he was doing much better if I placed one in the plam of my hand and then he was able to pick it up (after a few tries) with his fingers. We made a game too, one for Ethan and two for Mommy

They are good. I'm more concerned about Mommy eating them all up and not saving some for Matty...
What I ended up doing was placing them in the palm of my hand. When he picks one up I help guide him into putting it in his mouth. I even help him grab them.
Do you ladies think that is a good way of teaching him?

The puffs are hard to resist, I think he will find his mouth in due time with no help at all.
I did, and haven't stopped since

Took my son about 2 weeks of practice to perfect self feeding. I would feed him or guide him - he learned quickly. They watch more and learn more than you think.
