We went looking for houses for the first time today...
and we found 2 houses that we loved! One was in Baldwin, and the other was in Merrick. They were priced a little higher than our budget. The RE said that one of them already dropped by 100k. I am going to keep my eye on it to see if it goes any lower. It was fun - I cant wait to see more houses!!

Merrick is a great town and the schools are excellent too. Beautiful Cape.....
As for Baldwin, I would look for something with oceanside schools if you can...Silver Lake area of baldwin. The schools are a little scary in Baldwin

Merrick is a great area. Badlwin really depends oh what's important to you.

It was our first day looking. These are great houses, but I know there is more out there! We liked the Baldwin house better because it was a lot bigger and more spacious, but we are iffy on Baldwin....

that's N. Merrick. Both are great. If I had to pick one I would pick the N. Merrick one.
Good for you that your found stuff you love! Some people go around for months not finding anything they like.

I was about to say the same thing.
Three of my fellow teachers left Baldwin school district a few years ago and even took a pay cut to transfer to my district. The SD has gone way downhill, a lot of gang activity, etc. My friend's attendance records were always being used in student's court cases to prove they were or weren't in her class at a particular day and time In my 13 years of teaching in my district that has never happened to me.
Merrick, on the other hand, if it is Bellmore-Merrick school is probably the best district on the south shore of Nassau county.
I'd jump at Merrick and wouldn't give Baldwin a second though.

The Merrick house is adorable! I grew up in Merrick and still love going back. If I lived in the states and wanted to live on LI, I would buy that house! Its adorable

The merrick house is absolutely gorgeous, if you compare it to the baldwin house, obviously the plot size is much larger on the baldwin house and the double garage compared to the single that the merrick house offers.
As for the schools, i could not agree more, baldwin is very very bad. You can compare the districts yourself on www.schoolmatters.com
North merrick schools although not as prestigous as south merrick schools are extremely good. If i were you, id research the school districts so you can see for yourself.
IMHO i just bought a home, and i was only looking for south shore, with good schools. We decided on massapequa but we looked in merrick, and i loved the area. I did not even look at a home in baldwin because the area is just really going downhill.

Both homes are lovely, however I could not agree more with the other posters regarding Merrick being the better choice based on the school districts. I actually grew up in Baldwin Harbor and graduated from Baldwin HS and have to say that Baldwin has changed drastically since I moved away over 10 years ago (and not for the better).

I live down the block from that Merrick house and I absolutely love it. There is no work needed at all.
It is walking distance from all 3 schools...Elementary, Junior High, and High School.
I can not say anything bad about the schools, or the area...I love it here.

It was a great house and was decorated very nicely too. The backyard was tiny though. Looked like a really nice area.
