So, I got a quote to convert from oil to gas last night...
Slomin's said it would be upwards of $7000-8000. They told me being I have a new underground fiberglass tank, new burner and hot water heater it didnt make sense for me cost wise to convert at this time...plus he said the cost of gas is going up and to put out that expense to only save $200 a year is silly.
I was unsure of the quote being so high b/c my aunt and uncle got a quote out in suffolk for around $2,000 and they were going to need to run the gas lines to the house. He said this doesnt make sense b/c the new boiler along is upwards of $600.
I dont know I am confused. Did anyone else get quotes this high?

I called National Grid about 3 weeks ago - running the line to the house was going to be 3K alone. I'm sure the burner and accessories would probably be another 5 or 6K. No thanks, I'm sure the price of gas is going to go up just like the price of oil.
We got the new oil burner instead.

We paid $7K+ and DH did a lot of the legwork himself.

I had it done for less than 5k by Burner King. Slomins doesn't want to lose your oil business. By the end of this winter, the burner paid for itself, in 2 years.
There is no scenario where converting is going to cost you more money.......

We did it for about 5k as well...DH did most of it, but we had to purchase new boiler, etc, hire out a LIC guy to come in. So it can add up but so far worth it.

I have a price of $5300 including everything from burner king. You should give them a call, see what they quote you at.
Unfortunately, town of babylon denied permits because the street was repaved recently and they don't want national grid messing it up...... I'd rather have an ugly street and nicer monthly heating bills

I agree
Us too.
Gas is going to go up, of course. But at least you won't be shelling out over $1000 at a clip to heat your home.

I find it very ironic that Slomin’s, which is an oil only provider, gave you such a high quote for converting to gas and then tried to talk you out of it.
unless I am missing something and they suddenly provide natural gas now as well
I suggest you do some research on your own and get another quote. Natural gas is a domestic product – and there is PLENTY of it. why else would most of the nation be using it for heat and now they’re building cars that run on it.

ok, I stand corrected. Slomin's does offer gas heating link
I would still get another estimate. their margins on oil could be way higher.

What exactly is included in these estimates you are receiving? I know Keyspan will give you a gas boiler for about $500, so what are these gas companies / plumbers doing for all this money? Is the installation that much money?

I am in the process of converting this week. Between parts, labor, permits, etc. it is easily a $6000 job for us.

They need to run the pipes, take out the old boiler, install the new equipment and I am sure there are other things to add to that list.

You also have to either get rid of or fill up our exsiting oil tank.
