I first heard about vitamin d's benefits from my perinatologist, Dr. Kofinas. Apparently it is vital for overall health. I now take supplements.
At the same time, my mom, who is fighting cancer, found out she has low vitamin d levels, also in the single digits. She has major catchup to do with her levels, but she unfortunately already has 4 fractures in her back over the past few weeks from depleted calcium in her bones (my poor mom). It just reinforces the importance of vitamin d. And vit d deficiency is also linked to cancer!
I didn't know about the diet soda link... interesting. I stopped drinking diet soda when I was pregnant and I decided to give it up completely. Thanks for the heads up!
I was just going to say this. Also you don't have to take a once a week pill. I was taking daily 5000 iu and I need to get more

I am on a once a week pill for one part of the deficiency (vit D2) and a daily pill for the other part (vit d3). I was told the once a week was important for my particular levels..i don;t know much more unfortunately!

Crashing...
DH just had to get a Rx filled for Vitamin D. His parents and his sister as well. He has to take it 1x/week for 3 or 4 months. He was told it's extremely common, especially because it's winter and you're not outside as much. It cost him a $7 copay but if the insurance didn't cover it, it would have been about $20-30 according to the pharmacist.
I picked him up a bottle of OTC Vitamin D for after the Rx runs out. It's not as many iu's but it should help him maintain the right levels.
ETA: DH does not drink Diet Soda at all. He's mainly an Iced Tea drinker with the exception of the occasional Pepsi every now and then.

You can also get liquid form D3. One drop is 1000 miu so you can adjust as necessary.

Wow! I don't drink diet soda, but I had no idea about the connection! I hope you start to feel better soon!
I do drink diet soda (like you, OP, it is out of control- as in I stop at the drive-thru on the way to work for a Large Diet coke...DD tells me she wants a diet coke at every mean- she's never even had soda, she just hears me ordering it )
My Vitamin D levels were low when I was pg with DD2, I wonder if they still are...
Thanks for the PSA!
ETA: I took an OTC supplement while I was pregnant, I haven't taken it since. My grandmother had Osteoperosis...I guess I should get on the ball.

I agree with the above. I also was told I had low vitamin D after a routine physical with no symptoms. Also, I NEVER drink diet soda - I haven't had diet soda since 2006! I remember this b/c I stopped drinking it when I was pregnant with my DS and never started again. Actually, I don't use artificial sweetners of any kind - so I think you can have it either way!

Oh, you can definitely have low Vit D from other factors..
I was just told that drinking diet products (in my case diet soda) is just making it worse and prob the reason my levels were as low as they were.
But there are so many other reasons one could be deficient as well. The fact that its winter (less sunlight) is a contributor as well!

Re: So, I got bloodwork results today after going to an endocrinologist....(with a PSA about diet soda)
http://www.webmd.com/diet/vitamin-d-deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency can occur for a number of reasons:
You don't consume the recommended levels of the vitamin over time. This is likely if you follow a strict vegetarian diet, because most of the natural sources are animal-based, including fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, and beef liver.
Your exposure to sunlight is limited. Because the body makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight, you may be at risk of deficiency if you are homebound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure.
You have dark skin. The pigment melanin reduces the skin's ability to make vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure. Some studies show that older adults with darker skin are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency.
Your kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its active form. As people age their kidneys are less able to convert vitamin D to its active form, thus increasing their risk of vitamin D deficiency.
Your digestive tract cannot adequately absorb vitamin D. Certain medical problems, including Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, and celiac disease, can affect your intestine's ability to absorb vitamin D from the food you eat.
You are obese. Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells, altering its release into the circulation. People with a body mass index of 30 or greater often have low blood levels of vitamin D.
It's the caffeine that causes the vitamin D deficiency. http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/vitamins-minerals/the-effect-of-caffeine-on-vitamin-absorption.html
Calcium
Caffeine causes calcium to be excreted in the urine and feces. For every 150 mg of caffeine ingested, about the amount in one cup of coffee, 5 mg of calcium is lost. This effect occurs even hours after the consumption of caffeine. One study of postmenopausal women found that those who consumed more than 300 mg of caffeine lost more bone in the spine than women who consumed less.
Caffeine also inhibits the amount of calcium that is absorbed through the intestinal tract and depletes the amount retained by the bones. Studies have shown that women with high caffeine intake suffer more hip fractures than those who avoid caffeine or drink in moderation (1 to 2 cups per day). Vitamin D
Caffeine inhibits vitamin D receptors, which limit the amount that will be absorbed. Because vitamin D is important in the absorption and use of calcium in building bone, this could also decrease bone mineral density, resulting in an increased risk for osteoporosis.

Your doctor should have mentioned that ALL soda can cause a vitamin D and calcium deficiency. It's def. not just diet.
A girl I worked with was severely deficient, and had horrible symptoms. She felt better once she was taking mega doses of Vitamin D from the drugstore. I don't think it's a money make ploy from Pharma, since vitamin D is OTC stuff that isn't even regulated by the FDA.

I try to stay away from anything "diet" or sugar free that contains artificial sweetners....I had no clue about Vitamin D.
I am glad that you took care of yourself and went to the doctor, this is something I need to do.

How much caffeine do you have each day? It's the caffeine that has an effect on vit D absorption, not the fact that it's diet soda. Do you have a lot of coffee, tea, or other caffeine?
If so, you should try and cut down on the caffeine intake.

Last year at my physical my vit d was low but my b12 was deficient. I was tired all the time and just attributed it to being so busy. I needed shots to catch up and vitamin supplements...get your blood work done !! The dr. Said they are seeing both vit d and b12 deficiencies a lot.

last year dh was in a funk (depressed and leg pain) they found out that his vit d level was very low-we were shocked bc dh works outside and drinks milk like theres no tomorrow. we never knew the connection between caffeine and vit d.
he takes a vit d pill daily. it has helped him a lot.

Re: So, I got bloodwork results today after going to an endocrinologist....(with a PSA about diet soda)
Its not only the caffeine that leaches calcium from the body..its the high phosphoric acid content too..and diet coke is one of the worst offenders, along with other sodas. So even caffeine free soda does damage...
I'm cutting back a ton on drinking it. I'm allowing myself two cans a day ( i was drinking prob a bunch more) for now until i can wean without getting horrible headaches.

Re: So, I got bloodwork results today after going to an endocrinologist....(with a PSA about diet soda)
I went to my dr in Dec complaining of hair loss and extreme exhaustion. Came back with low levels for iron (although not anemic) and very low Vitamin D. They didn't give me a prescription - just to take an OTC Vitamin D pill lately as well as an iron pill. I saw my gyno the other day for my yearly exam and she is now testing hormone levels because she said that the low Vitamin D does something with one of the hormones - t3 or t4 (don't remember which one.)

I hope the extra vitamin D helps you and I dont mean to be cynical but. .
this is the new "thing" Vitamin D. . .
I can count off teh top of my head about 20 people in my friends and family who have to take supplements now . . .
i am not saying its not a real issue but i feel like its more of a push from a pharma company. . .
I never went on it b/c the dosage she wanted me to go on was ridiculously expensive. . .
ANY soda steals calcium and vitamins from your bones and not just diet soda. . . and a few people I know who NEVER drink soda also were recently diagnosed with this "deficiency"
IF you don't mind me asking...you said you know so many people with this deficiency..did all these people have bloowork done for specific reasons?? Or did a doctor look at them and say "oh you're tired, i bet your vit D levels are low..".Just wondering.
When a normal healthy range is 30-100 and someone has single digits, i'm sure its something to correct ( i would think??)
i had this come up a couple of years ao- i said i felt tired and it came up i had a vitamin D deficiency
also my mom just had routine blood work and they tested her vitamin D and she was low
