So I now need to incorporate math & reading into all my lessons.

Im the K-5 Phys Ed teacher. Math is easier. When were stretching every day I have my students count by multiples of 6 or 10 or whatever.

Reading though... I dont want to send home hw. Its something that needs to be done in class. Im thinking of starting a word wall. I can put little velcro pieces up on my wall that says P.E. Then every class we can put up a new laminated word and talk about it. Trying to think of a way it will really last. Im thinking a bigger index card behind it, then have it laminated. IDK. I dont know how school would feel if I put permanent velcro pieces on the wall, but I have only a teeny bulletin board in the gym. Im kind of thinking out loud here, but does anyone have any other ideas?

I dont really want to take away too much moving time. Ive incorporated reading into lessons here and there but it now has to be daily.

Re: So I now need to incorporate math & reading into all my lessons.

Hmm.. How about one a week, someone else is responsible for bringing in an article about ANYTHING phys-ed, health related.. It could be an article about nutrition, weight, an athlete... They could find it online, in a magazine, newspaper, anywhere. I know you said you don't want to assign homework, but one person could do it each week and you could discuss it for a few minutes at the beginning of each class.

ETA: .. I realized you meant daily.. Hmm...

You don't necessarily have to put words up with velcro on the wall. You could always put them on cards and hole-punch them, and put them on a ring. You don't have to put it up- just having it accessible to the kids should be enough I would think.

They want you to do reading. If everyone else in the building has a smartboard, it might be time for you to ask for one. It would make incorporating reading so much easier for you.

Re: So I now need to incorporate math & reading into all my lessons.

Can you make reading part of a relay race sometime? For example, either you read a story to the kids (for the younger kids) or choose someone to read to the rest of the class while doing warm up exercises. The stories can be paragraphs/mini stories about sports. Maybe make the kids run a relay race where the last part of the race (before running back to the start) is to answer a question. YOu can put up big chart paper with numbers (1., 2., 3., etc) and the kids that are running has to answer the question before running back to the start.

Can you also do word searches? Word searches means they have to be able to spell...spelling leads to literacy fluency.

Or, what about having the kids keep an activity journal and then once a month (or whenever you want) have the kids read an entry to the class...maybe one kid a gym period?

Check this article out:

Good luck!!

Re: So I now need to incorporate math & reading into all my lessons.

The PE teachers in our school wrote/typed grade level word wall words on poly spots and made up some game where the kids (in this case 1st graders) had to run to the spot and call out the word they stepped on. I'm not sure what they did with the upper grades though.

Great ideas.

I also like your Word Wall idea. You said permanent Velcro might be a problem...what about using Fun Tak or maybe even masking tape to hang the words instead?

Our Primary PE teacher does this too - also sounds "sh" "th" etc

I found this out, since all special areas are taking the schools ELA average score for APPR!

Re: So I now need to incorporate math & reading into all my lessons.

I do a game where I use a pocket chart and put sight words up and have the kids run up and smack the word with a fly-swatter. I will say something like "Hit a word with a diagraph" or "This word is another word for happy." I hang it high enough that they have to jump. You could do a game like that but only put up phys-ed words.

That sounds hysterical. Love it. That would be great for part of one class, but... hmmm... I planned on putting up one word at a time and just adding more. However that might work if I filled up a whole wall with a bunch of words, like pulse, stride, pace etc and had like 3 kids go at a time all with fly swatters LMBO. Like a word search. I like routine... Im wondering if we can somehow start like this every class??

When the kids enter the gym they immediately start jogging to music. They then walk to cool down, go to their floor spots where I notice whos missing and go right to their warm up. Then stretching where they count by multiples of 1, then 2s, then 3s up to 10. (Normally). We then huddle up and talk about what we did last class, review rules, and then go over what were doing for the day. I have subjects to cover so I cant just play fun games every day so Im looking to see if I can fit something like this in during my intro or warm up or something... Again Im thinking out loud, sorry.

Your ideas are so great everyone. Thank you for helping me out! :)

Our phys-ed teach is amazing! He is really good at this! He teaches skills used for various sports but as he teaches each skill, he is also teaching the history through a read aloud or some quick paragraph.

I think it would be great if you could ask each grade which skill/strategy for comprehension they are focusing on that week and tie it into the lesson. For example, predicting: predict what would happen if I am a righty and step with my left first,... Or visualizing- visualize the target to the left of ______.

It is pretty funny, lol. My kids have ADD, etc. so I have to do stuff to keep them moving or I am screwed. They learn so much more when its fun for them. You can either drive the fun bus or get run over by it, lol.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Im going to do this and call in my PE BUZZ words.

To a PP I also like the idea of reading about the history of a sport before starting a unit. Usually I just tell them, but thats a better idea!
