What are you up to in your math curriculum? That may help with ideas...

Re: teachers? math lessons grade 4
i'm not a teacher, but i'm a speech therapist at a school, so i see a lot of what the teachers do... when are you getting observed? i've seen teachers this time of year do graphs of kids favorite halloween candy.... pick a few kinds of candy and take "vote" on which are their favorites, and then have the kids graph the results (ie 10 people said snickers were their favoite, 5 people like smarties, etc...) or if its after halloween, you could maybe do the same type of thing but with what type of candy the kids got when they went trick or treating... again, i'm not a teacher, but this is what i've seen teachers in my school do for this....

Re: teachers? math lessons grade 4
GoI really liked the idea of candy graphing.....if its after halloween you can have them fill out a tally after they go trick or treating with the types and amounts of candy they got, so they can use that data to graph. You can also do graphing with tv commercials. Have students watch an hour of tv and tally the types of commercials they see.....car, food, electronics, etc.
Good Luck!

Re: teachers? math lessons grade 4
if you decide to do a lesson w/M and Ms, you can give each group a small bag of them. Have them sort the colors on a math organizer. They can then graph the results. Will you have done previous lessons on what needs to be included in a bar graph? If so, you can give them a check off within their groups too make sure they have included everything. If you decide to nix the candy, you can do a graphing lesson on heart rate at different times that is simple. Or if you want to do prep work before, you can have the kids keep track of things at home such as time spent reading, playing outside, watcing TV etc and work with the results for your observation. Or, you can do a TurkeyDay graph too, with favorite sides. Ok, sorry so long... FM if you want more info. HTH
