So my great uncle died this morning

and now I am sitting here thinking about him being the last of that generation in my family. The loss of history and family stories that died with him. It's said. We have on cousin that is in her 80s and knows many of the stories since her mom was the oldest I have been trying to get her to record the great stories but she seems uninterested. It's sad. Our family has a ummm colorful history to say the least and something that should be passed down from generation to generation.

Has anyone else ever had a family member record either on tape or in writing your families history?

My Dad was the baby of the family and I bought him a tape recorder and little notebook to record his many colorful stories before his illness took him.

He never did it.Chat Icon I can totally relate to how you feel. I do have one Aunt left and she will be 95 next week!

We are going to Washington tomorrow for a huge family reunion. It all feels so bittersweet doesn't it?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

No one in my family has done it - but I am constantly trying to get something like that started. It's amazing the stories I hear from distant relatives. Always followed by "You didn't know that?"

NO, but I really want to. I think it's so important and fun to know how your family has evolved over time. I worry that once my grandmother dies (last living grandparent) a lot of unheard stories will go with her Chat Icon

I know the feeling of lost history, you wouldn't imagine what I had to go thru to find out family history when I was researching it last year!

Thank you all. Uncle Normie was sick for a long time. He is no longer suffering. I just wish someone would document the history we are losing. I am going to work on my cousin once we are done with all the formalities.

Re: So my great uncle died this morning

I'm so sorry to hear about your Great Uncle's passing.

Yes, my uncle thought to have my grandmother audio taped six months before she died. She passed in 1999 but didn't tell us about the existence of these tapes until just last yearChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Although the stories are sort of scattered and not complete, just hearing my grandmother's voice sent me into hystericsChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Her thick german accent is something I will never forget. There were stories of her family (the loss of her six year old brother to an appendix rupture, her 18 year old brother dying in WWI, saving the family farm from wildfires) that I never knew of. To me, that CD and her stories are one of my most prized possessions.

ENCOURAGE the family (whatever is left) to create those legacies. Once those stories are gone, you can never recapture them :(

I had my grandfather give me the family meatball recipe before he got too sick. I know it sounds silly but it has been in his family and no one else but him knew how to make them.

I also did a family tree before my grandmother passed and wrote down all names and DOB from the past. She also made a family tree for the family. It is great!!!

I was able to trace back to the Ellis Island Record Book and old wage books and found my family it is amazing.

I want to do this with DH's family too. On my MIL's side, no one really talks about the passed generations. All I know is the DH's grandfather was a limo driver for Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra.

Sorry to ramble on. I am very sorry for your lossChat Icon Chat Icon

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My grandmother is a holocost survivor, I believe the last one in my family. We've often tried to get her to talk about it on tape so it's something that is never forgotten about, but understandbly the memories are too painful for her.

See that's awesome. I wish I had done this with my grandparents when they were alive and/or able to. I really think I am going to talk to my cousin about doing this. There are so many stories I have heard her tell about my great uncles. I know of some from reading books that they were in but the family stories are what I want to preserve.

So understandable, but sadly as were are nearing the end of having a lot of holocaust survivors around, they really need to preserve the memories of their family members that have departed first hand. I wish I had done this with my grandfather also but it was always a taboo topic and now it's too late and there is no one leftChat Icon

I haven't but seeing my grandmother was Alzheimer's, I've lost the option. I'll have to tape my parents.
