So our cat hates our dog
And all our dog wants to do is play!
Right now, we have a gate in our hallway so our cat has free reign of the bedrooms and the basement (where his food, water, and bed is.
The dog is with us in the rest of the house.
I miss having him hang out with us, but he HATES the dog, and I don't blame him, because the dog chases him and corners him (I don't think she realizes she is scaring the cat).
What do I do? Leave it alone, hope the cat comes around?
The cat doesn't seem too unhappy - he sleeps in bed with us at night and still gives us as much attention as ever.

Re: So our cat hates our dog
ahhh the life of cat and dog ownership... its so fun lol
your situation sounds exactly what ours was like when we got our puppy... the cat hated him & all our pup wanted to do was play with the cat lol
honestly, the best thing we did was just let them run free together... sure the cat swatted at him A LOT -- but that put the dog in his place real fast lol they eventually learned their boundaries & they are BFF now!

Re: So our cat hates our dog
ours is the opposite, our cat is always trying to play with out dog. Today I found my cat wrapped around our dog's muzzle, biting her. She was looking at me going "Mom, get him off" its was so cute.
I would say leave them be and if it gets out of hand intervene. I think your dog needs to learn boundaries. Our cat swiped at Casey and after that she learned not to corner him. And now they're the best of friends.

Normally, I would say this is true, but our cat is actually declawed in the front, so he can't fully defend himself if truly cornered.

since your dog seems to want to play with the cat, do you think that the dog would actually put the cat in danger??
if not, i think its actually better that the cat is declawed.. i was ALWAYS afraid that our cat was going to catch the dog's eye with his nails when he used to swat at him, but thankfully he never took out his nails when swatting

Re: So our cat hates our dog
First, you need to teach your dog the "leave it" command so he will leave the cat alone immediately when you tell him to. If he learns to leave the cat alone and will stop chasing / cornering the cat immediatley upon command, then you can at least have the two in the same part of the house while you are around.
I think that the cat should always have a part of the houes he can access that the dog can't. Cat food needs to be out of reach of the dog and cat litter should be as well. I think the cat also needs a way to get away from the dog if it wants to. I don't, however, think the cat should have to be isolated to that separate area of the house all the time. If you can get the dog to learn the leave it command, then they should be able to be in the same part of the house when you are present.
I would also make sure that there are times that the dog is confined and the cat gets attention in other areas of the house from you guys, too.
If your cat is declawed, I honestly wouldn't leave the dog alone with the cat unless the dog is 100% trustworthy (which may be never). I've never had a cat get a dog in the eye when swatting, and I think it is good when a dog knows that a cat can and will defend itself. Since your cat is declawed, though, he is at a distinct disadvantage, so I would always supervise the two.
If you teach the dog to leave the cat alone, they will learn to coexist faster.
Good luck!

Re: So our cat hates our dog
I could have written your post! We have two cats and they were none too happy with us when we got a dog. They stay upstairs in the bedrooms while the dog is in the rest of the house with us. If they do come down, he wants to play with them but they hiss and spit at him and he runs away (the big baby). They all sleep with us at night, the cats on the bed and the dog on the floor. I also miss having them with us around the house and thought that they would get used to each other but it's been 9 months! I guess they will just never be friends

Re: So our cat hates our dog
my cat was like that in the beginning- my then puppy cornered my cat in the bathroom and wanted to play and rough... the cat though is too quick and ran passed my puppy and just sat up high (on my entertainment center)... after a while they get used to each other... we now have 2 cats and 2 dogs and there at times they dont like each other but they know what to do...

Thank you for the advice - we are going to begin training with a professional soon so I know that will help. The cat has a small door (too small for the dog) to get into the basement where his litterbox food and water is, so he can always retreat there if he wants to.

ITA. If you teach the dog the leave it command with some food or toy reward (whatever is more rewarding to him) then you can transfer the training to the cat.

Re: So our cat hates our dog
We had our dog first, but when BIL moved in downstairs he got a cat. I love cats so I wanted him and the dog to get along. Everyone told me not to waste my time, they'd never be friends. But I'd take the cat on my lap and sit on the couch. I'd make my dog sit and I'd let the dog sniff the cat only if he was being gentle. Then eventually I'd just let the cat roam around on the couch, making sure to keep the dog calm, though still letting him investigate. Eventually, the cat was brave enough to wander the house on his own, the dog trailing curiously at his heels. Well the two wound up being best friends. I mean, BIL moved out over 2 years ago and my dog still looks around for the cat when you say the cat's name. Here's some pics, just because I never would've believe they would've gotten to be so close!!
He won't even let our other dog eat his food, but the cat, no problem!

This reminds me of my white shephard and my black cat... They went EVERYWHERE together and were inseparable. They even slept together, all curled up together.

Re: So our cat hates our dog
Our dog used to chase the cats when we first got him too. We told him no, and he learned that was not acceptable behavior. Now they all pretty much just avoid each other. They aren't friends, but there's no animosity either.

It's so sweet! They used to sleep together, too. I have a picture somewhere but can't find it. He still looks around for him when I call the cats name. Maybe one day we'll have a reunion.
