I do agree with trying everything first before resorting to medicating her. But, if she is sooo uncomfortable that is why they invented medicine!! Like I said before DS doesn't have reflux issues but he suddenly started spitting up a lot when he was 3 months old. We waited until he was 4 months to start cereal, well if significantly decreased his spitting up. So, I hop eit helps her. Good luck and Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

hannah is on 1 cc 3x daily of axid. i know alot more babies that are on more than ava's dose of zantac. go to www.infantreflux.org and you will learn alot. i dont know why so many docs wont prescribe ppi's! check out their message boards.

as for the water, i suffer from GERD badly and water never helped me. i am hesitant to give hannah water b/c i would rather her have the formula. thank goodness ava is gaining. hannah is gaining too, but very slowly. maybe you should switch her to axid? it tastes better than zantac.

i think i am going to try one more gastro doc. someone recommended dr. moy to me so we shall see. our poor babies. i hate to see them suffer!

Re: So we went to the GI today...

I'm so sorry you didn't have better luck with the GI doctor. Which one did you end up seeing?

I can tell you we started Marron on Axid about 2 weeks ago and she was even worse on the medicine. It seemed to really upset her belly and gave her so much gas it was unbelievable. I took her off it and she is better now without it.

If Ava is that uncomfortable while on the max dose of Zantac, why won't the doctors give her the Prilosec or Prevacid? It just doesn't make sense to me to let a baby be in pain like that day after day. It just isn't fair to the baby (or to the Mommy either). I agree with trying non-medicinal interventions first, but my goodness -- how much is a baby expected to endure??? I would definately go see another doctor and insist on relief for your little baby. Good luck, I'll be thinking of you. Chat Icon

Actually, since I posted this, I have been doing a little research on my own and found that there was a study published this year regarding the use of gastric acid inhibitors increasing the risk of acute gastroenteritis and community-acquired pneumonia in children. Maybe that is why the doctors are becoming more judicious with their use of these drugs...??? Here is the summary of the article recently published.

Link to article

One of the interesting things to note from this article was that children are at a higher risk if they have other illnesses or are immunocompromised. Since they have already agreed to put her on the Zantac, how could it hurt to try her on the Prevacid/Prilosec since they have the same risks as Zantac does, according to the article.

Here is a link to an article that says that treatment with a PPI rather than an H2 blocker is more effective:

I hope these can help you some. Unfortunately, there are so few studies done on children, and especially infants to prove 100% that these drugs are right to use, so many doctors prefer to err on the side of caution -- possibly even more so in light of the article that came out this year regarding increased risk of pneumonia. HOWEVER, it still is not right to leave your poor baby writhing in pain for most of the day. I would think in her case the benefit of the drug would outweigh the risk of it -- and that is the question the doctors should be asking themselves. Perhaps that is what you need to be telling them. If you have any other questions, or need any more information or help, please do not hesitate to ask.

I truly thought this visit to the GI doc would be the answer for you guys. I really hope Ava will be feeling better soon.Chat Icon

Re: So we went to the GI today...

Those are some of the research articles that we have compiled in hopes of "educating" some doctors.

My personal fear is just what some of the research dictates.....her being more suseptable to health issues, whether it be immunodeficiency problems or continued GI probs.

They may try to treat these kids but to withold what is empirically validated is UNETHICAL.Chat Icon

Good luck to you both.

Sad Dad.....
