Re: So what are you going to spend your tax rebate on?
Posted by DeniseMarie
I told DH we should put it back into the economy bc that is the whole point. So we are going to buy smethnig for the house
yup this is what we will do as well. our first thought would be to put it into savings, but I feel like we should pump it back into the economy since that is the point

Re: So what are you going to spend your tax rebate on?
I absolutely DESPISE the idea of the tax rebate. It is a terrible thing for the economy as a whole. This poll proves it, 80% of people are doing things with it that don't help the economy at all. I think you will see that nation-wide, and with good reason.
Yes, it will be great to get a check, if you are eligible, but tax rebates are not the way to "heal" the economy.

I don't despite the idea of a tax rebate, as I feel we pay too much in taxes already, but it's a joke to think it will truly stimulate the economy. I feel that giving $600 to $1200 to people earning less than the amounts giving isn't going to do a whole lot to stimulate the economy at all. At best, it will increase consumer confidence, which would be wonderful and helpful -- but the chances that $600 - 1200 a pop will do much for consumer confidence are slim.
We DO need more money in the economy to stimulate it, yes, but as you indicated, the chances of people doing something to stimulate the economy with this money is slim to none. While spending might increase or savings may increase a little bit, I don't think it'll be anywhere near enough to stimulate the economy as planned. Then again, the government keeping this money won't do a whole lot to stimulate the economy either.
We don't qualify for the rebate, but if we did, we'd invest that money wisely and agressively, as we do all of our money.
I am open to the idea that people disagree with me and I know there are two or more sides to everything. (I'd love to hear other opinions and theories on how people think this will or won't work. I'm very interested in it.) Being a staunch capitalist, I realize that not everyone shares my views -- but I believe you need to put major $$ into the economy to stimulate it. You need to give companies the ability and incentives to create jobs and invest more in the economy. While $600 - 1200 COULD go a long way if people used that money properly, the chances of that happening are slim...
I'll be an optimist, though, and hope it increases consumer confidence, savings, and investments. As I said, I hope everyone eligible does get the tax rebates... but I am somewhat skeptical about what good it will do for the economy as a whole. Like I said, I'm open to hearing other thoughts.

$150K seems pretty rich to me.
not when you own a house on LI
DH and I are under the limit - but these things should be done with regional limits. $150K in NY does not go as far as $150K in Arkansas
