So what happens now

I scheduled the speech and the psychological and then we have the CPSE meeting the end of September.

Then what happens?

Maybe it's just me but I can't get out of my mind the thought that ppl will have a view of my child from only a couple of sessions that may be completely off-base.

Or that there's a bunch of other reasons he may act the way he does, this is just him, his personality, our parenting style, enviroment, etc.

Do they recommend a doctor at that point to make a formal diagnosis if they think there's something there?

He's been having really good days lately so I can't help but think that maybe this is just a bunch of malarky, but friends and family all tell me that I'm doing the right thing, so I have no regrets later if there really is a problem. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The psych can make a diagnosis if necessary, so there will be no recommendation for a dr (unless they suspect neurological problems, etc., but the psych will diagnose spectrum).

of course they won't get a good idea of your DS, but much of it will be questions for you to answer about him. be honest, and if you want services, judge based on the bad days instead of the good. i know in my head if they asked if he dressed himself, i would think well, there were those few times he put on x...but in reality, 99% of the time he doesn't (just as an example).

if he qualifies for just speech, it will most likely be in your home. if there are greater behavioral issues (or if the speech is so delayed they don't feel he could function in a mainstream preschool), they will recommend a developmental preschool (usually 2.5 hrs, 5 days/week), which will be paid for by the district.

i think it's good you are taking action, if for no other reason than to put your mind at ease. but i do believe that all of our behavior is a combo of nature and nurture, but no one will point fingers at you. i always thought that my ds would talk because i talked to him constantly, talk for my job, etc., and i judged others thinking they just weren't talking enough. but when it happens to you, you know it's just a random thing that has nothing to do with anything you do wrong.
