So where are these magical teacher stores (NYC preferably, but will go anywhere!)??

you have Lakeshore in New Hyde Park on Hillside Ave. It's geared towards lower grades, but still great for room stuff and manipulatives as well as some upper elementary books.
Vijays is...oh man, I think Elhurst...no...http://www.vijayseducationalsupplies.com/
Then there is Carol's which is on Union Tpke, about 2 miles west of Bell Blvd (now in Queens).
Plus, reallygoodstuff.com has great supplies.

Barclays School Supply is in Brooklyn. It isn't cheap though. And definitely do not go after the inservice days....it gets very crowded.
I like Lakeshore Learning also.

also, hit up target's dollar spot and dollar tree (you may have to go to a few of each as things are hit or miss) - you will be spending a lot over time, so every bit saved counts!) - and make sure to laminate anything of importance - check with your school if they have one you can use before you pay though! (plus if you use vis a vis markers on laminated posters, etc - you can use wipes or even just rinse with water to clean off! )

Also check out AC Moore and Michaels. They have some stuff...and you can always get those coupons in the paper or online. AC Moore also has a teacher discount program.
