So...I'm either really brave or really stupid--UPDATED!
My dog is home alone out of his cage for the first time during a regular work day
I had been slowly letting him out...when I went to the grocery store...or out to dinner....and then I started letting him out while I went to my part time job...about 5 hours at a time...and this is his first day with me being gone for a whole 8 hours.... I hope he behaves!!!!!
Cross your finger for me please!!!

Good luck -- is he confined to a specific room, or free to roam the house?
We let Scout have the kitchen basically - so much for crate training, I just hated to see him in there...

It is amazing - we slowly started doing this with Casey and everytime we came home - we found her sleeping in her cage.
I am sure he will be fine

The first few months we had our cats we kept them in one room. We were afraid when we let them out but a coworker told me that once they had some room to run, they would tire themselves out. We came home expecting cats hanging from the curtains and instead they were asleep on out bed!!

haha I give my cocker spaniel the run of the upstairs of the house and I gate off the stairs. I am not bravce (after having him for almost 3 years) to let him run through the house while I am not there.
I wish I were - kudos to you! He will do fine!

Sorry to say, but we lost a couple corners of our coffee table when we did that the first time!!
I did the same thing as you, tried it out for short trips and he was fine.
But then I guess he just got bored being home alone that long.
He was also still a pretty young puppy (maybe 6 months?)
Can you go home at lunch to check on him?

Good luck! We've also been weening (sp?) our dog from being in the crate all day. Right now she is back in there during the day due to some accidents!

We tried it and for a while it was good with our dog Norton. Then he chewed up our new rug, so back in the kitchen!!!
Then he started destroying the kitchen!!!!!
He's too big to lock in his crate all day, so we are trying to leave him out for a bit of the day by himself. It's like starting all over! 
I guess what I am trying to say is that it's a learning curve and I hope your pup does well.....

Right about now, he's probably going through the fridge wondering why you don't have any beer - then he'll set himself up on the sofa and tune into animal planet.
I'm sure he's just fine.
