Solar Panels

Anyone have them on their house? We had someone come to give us their presentation. Our house is properly situated; it seems like we would save about 1/3 on our electric bill - but I'm nervous about doing it. Please tell me the good, bad and everything else!

Re: Solar Panels

I've had them for almost 5 years now. (Do a search in here for solar panels, and you'll see tons of posts from me... Chat Icon )
We have roughly 9k watts of panels, and it covers 2/3 of our electric bill over the course of the year. It's seamless, so once it's install, you never need to think about them.
It also extends the life of your roof shingles, since sunlight is the biggest aging factor for shingles, and the panels protect the shingles from the sun. Also, by keeping the sun off the roof, the attic is much cooler.
It's a big up-front investment, but it pays for itself in 12-15 years (maybe less if LIPA keeps raising their rates....), and they have a 25 year warranty. There's no moving parts, so they should last longer than 25 years even, so after the pay-off, it's free money. Chat Icon It's nice getting bills in the summer for $5 (there's always a monthly line fee, even if there's a negative balance).

I got mine from SunNation

We were told that the cost of installation is $5000 plus about $120/month leasing fee. They said that this year NYS is giving a $5000 tax credit which would offset the cost of the installation. Do you know anything about that?

Call EmPower. 516 837 3459. I haven't heard about paying for installation and a month lease payment. We only pay for a monthly lease. Same with our friends who are getting theirs installed soon.

I don't lease my panels. I own them outright. 5 years ago, there were no leasing options. What happens when the lease contract is up? Do they take the panels back? Are you forced to buy them?
