Some drama for your Wednesday
Has anyone heard about the Marshall Plan for Moms?
It’s essentially a plan to pay moms for their “unseen labor” because women have been overwhelmingly laid off or left the workforce due to school closures.
Does anyone know if when they say “pay moms for their unseen labor” they mean ALL moms, or just ones who don’t work. Because everything I’ve read insinuates this is to pay mothers for caring for their children in lieu of their salary. That can’t be right, though, since all moms perform unseen labor. Some just do it exclusively and others do it while working a full time job.
Does anyone know?

That is interesting, never heard of it. I will look it up, I am curious to read about it. But hey, if someone wants to pay me for everything I do as a SAHM I am not going to complain! lol

It appears to be for women who left the workforce due to the pandemic.

Oh man. lol
I read up on it briefly, from what I can tell it doesn't seem like a bad idea. Why not help women get a leg up given the circumstances.

Believe me, I share the same sentiment. However, the data shows that women have been disproportionally affected by the pandemic. It’s a societal issue at its core, no doubt.

The idea is that on the whole, men's careers weren't as impacted by the pandemic as was women's. Women generally tend to pick up more of the child rearing even when both parents work. Of course this isn't always the case but there is truth in it. Definitely doesn't seem like a bad initiative.

I see it as two separate but related issues.
On a whole, yes, women’s careers have been affected at a greater rate. That’s society’s fault and paying mothers isn’t going to fix it. In fact, it may make it worse.
The second issue, IMO, is I can’t tell if they want to pay ALL mothers or just those who aren’t working. You can’t cite “payment for unseen labor” and only pay some for that unseen labor.

Yeah as I think we seem to forget there are many single dads out there who are in the same boat.

Did they say how this will be paid out too? Another stimulus?

Re: Some drama for your Wednesday
This from an article I just read
The "Marshall Plan for Moms" seeks to "revitalize and restore mothers in the workforce" and pay moms to do the work they’re already doing at home or support them if they wish to return to full-time jobs. A resolution for it has since been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, asking Congress and the White House to recognize and support working mothers by implementing multiple policies such as "establishing a robust paid leave plan, rebuilding and stabilizing the child care industry ... raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour or higher for all minimum wage workers, and providing access to mental health support for mothers."
From that it should be all mothers who work and don’t work but it doesn’t sound like they would be getting paid anything just introducing things that would make it easier for a mother to work.
But this is just one article and this is the first I am really hearing from it.
Either way I agree with you. It should include working mothers. I am actually confused why it would include SAHM that chose not to work versus mothers who had to quit or lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

Sounds like a great, much-needed program. I would support income caps, so wealthy people are not eligible under it. Not sure where exactly those caps would be, but there should be caps.

I am not ok with CAPS I got screwed with the stimulus even though we did lose money but we apparently made too much money though we definitely don’t for LI standards. You can’t just CAP based on a. Number. Also all taxpayers contribute no matter how much you make so why can’t everyone get it?

That’s partially my question. If it’s for women who have no income, there is no cap. It’s 0.
If it includes employed women, I don’t think there should be a cap. Payment for unseen labor. The labor is the same whether you make $30k a year or $300k a year.

I don't agree with this at all. If it does go into effect then it should apply to both men and women and only those who had to quit the workforce because they had no other option for childcare.

Re: Some drama for your Wednesday
SAHM’s who did not lose a job during this should not be getting anything. The reason most are home is because they have other income to survive on.
Where is this money coming from though? Have they indicated that?

Isn't this what unemployment benefits are for? Do we really need another government handout? Especially a handout that is a direct result of the government forcing businesses to shut down. Enough already.

This was exactly my thought. Wouldn’t the women who were laid off receive UI?

My husband is a stay at home dad. He does pretty much everything. I hope he gets paid for his "unseen labor" I can't tell you the last time I cooked or food shopped. Such a sexist concept that only women do that stuff

I could see this making sense if it is ONLY for women who were forced to quit their jobs due to school and daycare closures due to COVID. Someone who has always been a SAHM shouldn't be eligible- and yes, men who were forced to give up their jobs dur to the pandemic should be included too.

Not if they quit. If a person had to leave their job, then it was their choice and they can be denied UI.

Re: Some drama for your Wednesday
I get that women have been disproportionately displaced from the workforce because of the pandemic. Numbers support that more women have left the workforce to care for children then men and as a higher rate then we have seen in 33 years. I'm just not comfortable with the brief review of this plan. It seems like a back way to establish some very needed changes such as affordable child care, paid maternity and paternity leave and for more then 12 weeks. I would hate to see caps on this as well. I'm really confused with how I feel about this.
