Some info I learned from a Job agency
I just called a woman about a job posted on Monster.
The job was filled so she asked for some info so she could look for something for me. She asked my salary requirements.........I am almost embarrassed to say I told her no less than 50K.
She sucked in her breath and I was like, is that bad?
She said LI jobs pay crap, and I am talking mid-level jobs!!!!! She said the average pay is 40-45K.
Just a little insight as to why we may not be getting calls, the pay market sux!!!!!!!!

Re: Some info I learned from a Job agency
she is FULL OF SHYT! some jobs pay that little - like the one's that are still in the dark ages and places you wouldn't want to work for anyway.
it's REDICULOUS in this day and age (and LOCATION) for employers to think that they will be able to get good talent for that kind of salary

I hope she's wrong and it's just this company. I interviewed with a company that was paying more than that as well. Ironically I interviewed a while ago, they loved me, never called, and the job is still on their website!
They were also very rude and never even responded to my thank you email!

and I hear you on the no response thing. I can't tell you how many GREAT interviews I have been to (most of them I got called back for 2nd interviews) and never bothered to respond when I followed up. RUDE!

Re: Some info I learned from a Job agency
I think it depends on the company and the line of work. I wouldn't go around acting like someone who makes $45k is at a bad company or isn't worth more money, that's just too general of a statement to make.

I'm not knocking the salary in general, but for this profession that is WAY low!

True, but she also said "mid-level" - not manager.

Most MMs are mid-level though, not like a Marketing Director which is upper level. For some of the companies out there, I would knock the company if the salary was $40-45K, sorry!

So, I am guessing it's just this particular company, or all of LI?

Re: Some info I learned from a Job agency
Job agencies want to undercut you and give a better deal to the real client, the corporations. Go the direct route if possible. If you have prior experience you can get 50K.

Re: Some info I learned from a Job agency
Whoever told you that is full of crappola. Every company pays differently and marketing is a hot field right now. If you are not getting many bites on your resume, I would have a professional look at it for pointers (your local library should have a career resource desk). I would also look at your cover letter to make sure it's direct and to the point but that it also has something personal that sets you apart from all of the other candidates. Salaries on LI don't suck, just some recruiting agencies do. I can say that because I'm in that field (headhunting) so please don't jump all over me for that comment...I'm speaking from an insiders perspective.

Re: Some info I learned from a Job agency
i understand the frustration, but you'd be surprised. i was laid off in march and searching for PR jobs. I have 4+ years of experience and while I was pleased with my salary, it's nothing that anyone would WOW at. Well, a lot of these places, despite my experience, were looking to pay 40K. i was very surprised by what was out there (in NYC no less.)

Re: Some info I learned from a Job agency
That's rather low and sounds more like a pay after 2-3 years experience. Mid level would be 5+ years at least, I'm assuming?
My sister works in web marketing as an entry level and she's already making mid-30s. So after 2 more years at the company I have no doubt she can make close to 50k.
I would say 40-45k is low! But it really depends what industry you're with.
If you work for public or nonprofit, that's probably's the pay to be expected. But not if you're in advertising or finance.

Then I am making NOTHING. I work in advertising (doing artwork too) for over 10 years and make about $40,000.

I hope you don't take this they wrong way- but with 10 years experince- you are very underpaid!
have you been at the same place? I really think you should be making at least double that

No offense!! I have been working at the same place. In LI but I started at $8/hour before I went on salary. So I have more than doubled my income but we are still underpaid.

Re: Some info I learned from a Job agency
hazeleyes, if you're good at what you do, graphics people in advertising with that many years of experience should be getting paid at least 60 or 70k!
I have 10 years in the web as well and recently been interviewing alot.
The job market is HOT! Check out craigslist.org or mediabistro.com for design jobs, you'll see that for entry level 30-40k is the norm.
So armed with that information, go out there and get your deserved pay girl! :D
