Re: Some pics for the Jewish mommies out there!!!
What happens is - his BIL - the guy at the door, and my friend's husband (Eliyahu) say they are going out to look for him. They are both Israeli, (so they are so cute with their accents )
So, the BIL comes back, says he couldn't find Eliyahu anywhere. In the meantime, my friend starts dimming the lights... A few minutes later, a loud knock at the door, and there he is. He even lifts the sheet up enough to take a drink of wine without revealing his identity. He doesn't talk.... then he just waves and leaves!!! It was so funny. The kids get soooo excited, and Cailen was literally stunned.
When Eliyahu left, Cailen turned to me and said "More???"

When I was little, all we did was open the door for an imaginary Elijah (or Eliyahu in Hebrew) and then close the door. In order to keep the kids occupied during the seder, we were told to keep an eye on the cup of wine and see if it goes down as Elijah drinks!
This family I was with took it to a new level. SUCH a big deal is made about it - the 2 men going thru the neighborhood looking for him. Then the lights are dimmed, the cameras are held up, everyone is laughing as the door opens with Eliyahu, his hat falls off, he is handed the wine - it's so comical, that the kids love it - they have been doing it every year, so it's sort of like seeing a big scary man in a red costume with a beard
This is a very quirky and unique family. Nothing really fazes these kids! I thought Cailen would be a little freaked, but he looooved it - the whole enrgy surrounding it is so much fun - so much joy - that I think he "got" the joke!
Since I'm a bad Jew - I looked up why Elijah comes every year (we were just told he did ):
In the Passover or Pesach festival, when setting the Seder table for the Seder meal, a separate goblet or cup is set aside for Elijah since by Jewish tradition, Elijah visits every Seder that is held worldwide on both the first Seder night and, for Jewish people who celebrate an additional Seder, on the second Seder night. Toward the end of the Seder, in the 14th Step of 15 Seder Steps, when the orientation of the participants is directed to the future, the goblet or cup set aside for Elijah is filled with red wine. The door to the household is then opened just before Elijah is first mentioned during the Seder, to allow Elijah to enter and visit the Seder and its participants. Everyone at the Seder table then stands and Elijah is then welcomed into the household and he is then mentioned as the forerunner to the Messiah and an example of leading a G-dly life, in turn leading Elijah to symbolize hope and a better life for not only the Jewish people, but for all humanity. After the Seder leader recites this wish, the door to the household is closed and then everyone sits down again.
