Something I learned at my Childbirth class

My midwife said that if you massage the perineum (area between vagina & rectum) everyday starting around 35 wks, you will be less likely to tear during delivery.

Don't know how true this is but I'll try anything to prevent tearing. That's about the only thing I've learned so far. Everything was about breathing & relaxing

I know! They showed some pretty graphic stuff at my class (all kinds of deliveries & even the placenta being expelled) that I never want to see again.

I haven't tried it yet but my midwife swears it works

Re: Something I learned at my Childbirth class

I didn't massage anything and I actually didn't tear. Not with the 1st or the 2nd. I guess it helps that they were both small.

Honestly I prefer to just have the doctor cut me to prevent the tear...I have had far to many of my friends who have torn during delivery b/c they didnt want to be cut...(my sister included)...I dont think Id be able to trust it!!!!!!

Kelly I think you are right though..I dont think I can reach mine!!! But I do know that my DH would be all for massaging that area for me..

I didn't do the massages but since I delivered in a teaching hospital...I had 4-5 doctors in the room and I know at least one was stretching me out in that area and I didn't tear at all.
