Something interesting I read today in the paper about race- NO DRAMA PLEASE
OK, this is meant to start a discussion, possibly a debate- but not drama.
I found this letter in Metro-NY, and I thought I would post it to see everyone's thoughts about this:
"Within the first sentnece of your front page story "Iowa's for Obama", it stated Obama is black, rather than multicultural. We should not call him black when he has two parents and two heritages from his ancestory. This date backs to the old Jim Crow days where anyone who had African or African-American ancestory was considered "black" only.
In order for us to truly move forward in America, especially with a candidate like Obama, we need to begin to respect all multicultural peope for a growing multicultral America."
Thoughts?

I think it would depend on who is putting Obama forth as a "black" candidate...is it the media, or his camp?
if it's the media, then it puts Obama in a bad position. Pointing out that his mother is white could look like he's going after the white vote rather than just stating the true and obvious.
if it's Obama, well then, I guess that is part of his campaign strategy. it may seem to help his whole campaign for change to call himsefl the black candidate rather than the multicultural candidate.

Re: Something interesting I read today in the paper about race- NO DRAMA PLEASE
i think that a lot of votes won't understand or identify with the term "multi-cultural", and because of that the papers and such find it easier to refer to him as black. is that right? probably not.
but sometimes i think it all depends on who the politician wants the votes from. yes Obama is bi-racial---but it seems those who back him are going for the "he'll be the first black president" spin, and that is why the use of the word "black" is used so predominantly.

same with Hilary.
sadly, the adjectives used to describe them (black, female) always precedes them.

Agree. I just want a decent president for the next term. I don't care if he was green.

I agree. I don't understand why we have to label everyone

Doesn't he himself identify himself as a black-American?

Re: Something interesting I read today in the paper about race- NO DRAMA PLEASE
I know a lot of multi racial people who identify as one race or another. It doesn't bother me either way. Still I think voting in a black president is going to cause issues for people, and it's not the caucasian side of his heritage that is going to be so controversial in the south. We really can't avoid it.

I agree.
I think it's obvious what color his skin is. Does it really have to be stated?
They can't say they are using it to link him to different races for support because if that were the goal, they'd state his ethnicity (multi-cultural or whatever term would indicate his parents' heritage) not his "color".

This often happens with multiracial people. Look at Tiger Woods; in the US, he's most often thought of as a black American but in Asian, he's often marketed as Thai b/c of his mom.
I just hope people see past all of that, you know?

That's exactly what I was thinking. When I talk about a friend or co-worker who is black or hispanic, I never say "my black friend" because why do we have to see people that way? It's really such a shame to me that so many people feel the need to desribe by race when it's really not necessary, which I feel in this case with Obama, it's really not.
