Sophie's sick -- do I call the ped?

Sophia was off from the time she woke up yesterday, very fussy and cranky. She started sneezing a little, and I noticed some green mucous/snot when she was sneezing. I went out to my sister's yesterday and she was very tired the whole day, napping a lot more than usual.

fast fwd to last night -- I got her home at about 915 and since then she's been coughing, sneezing, gagging from the coughing, etc. she was HYSTERICAL last night, we're not sure if it was gas or if she was in pain, so now im wondering if her ears are bothering her? ANND she had a temp of 100.8 this am. She also hasnt been eating well, took MAYYBE 12-15 ounces yesterday. Do I call and get her in today? My Ped has sick-visit only hours on the weekend, but is she sick enough to warrant it? Also, she'll have to be around all the other "sick" kids that are there, so I dont know if it's worth the risk of her catching something else

How much green came out? Was it only once or throughout the day? Is she pulling on her ears? How is the fever now?
Sorry so many questions but if it is just a cold give her some tylenol, use saline up the nose, cool mist humidifier and raise her mattress with a towel.
If you feel like you want to have her checked out still then go in. Peace of mind is always worth the copay!

lots of green, throughot the day. whenever she sneezes it comes out. shes not pulling at her ears but shes only 4 mnths so i dont even know if she would Chat Icon ive been using the saline/aspirator and humidifier for whatever good that'll do. i guess the fact that shes not really eating well is what's getting to me. she usually wakes up with a diaper that's about to explode from pee, today it was barely wetChat Icon

Re: Sophie's sick -- do I call the ped?

100.8 isn't a fever in a baby of 4 months, so I wouldn't head to the pediatrician. Also, according to both my ped and allergist running green doesn't necessarily mean "sick" as in infection. It just means that garbage has been sitting up in their sinuses for awhile.

I absolutley SWEAR by the battery operated boogie sucker by Bebe Sounds. I put a few drops of saline in each nostril, let it sit for a minute, then suck that crap out. It really does help.

As for not eating, that's normal for colds. Mine had a hard time taking bottles/nursing when they were stopped up. If she's refusing still, maybe try using an eyedropper to give her little bits of fluid. Perhaps do the aspirator before each feeding. If she's lethargic though- definitely go to the pediatrician as dehydration can set in quickly.

Both my girls have been passing colds back and forth for a few weeks now- so I'm totally feeling your pain. It just stinks when they're feeling poorly.Chat Icon

I know it's hard to see her like that, but that's really not a fever at her age. I think it has to be like 104. There's unfortunately not anything the dr. can really do for her above and beyond what you're doing now. Give her tylenol to keep the fever down and just wait it out. If it gets to the point if she's really having trouble breathing then call the doc but its seems like just a cold, hang in there and keep trying to give her fluids and make sure she's having wet diapers. If she has one 101 or over it's considered a fever. It may go up. Fevers go up towards the afternoon. If you are worried I would call the ped to see what they say. Thay may want to see her. I hope she feels betterChat Icon

I should clarify, I didn't mean it's not a fever, just not one that my ped would say to come in for. Even at 101, because they can't do anything more than you can for just that. Of course call if you'd like, it can't hurt with her other symptoms, but the only time (even at that age) my ped had me come in was when DS had 103.8 and only because it had gone up after giving Tylenol, but every dr is different of course. You have to do what makes you comfortable. Chat Icon

thanks everyone! Chat Icon

she took 3.5oz of FM at 7am, and has refused anymore since. I did get her to take 1 oz of water mixed with motrin. that's all she's had since about 9:30pm last night.

she just has such a hard time breathing while eating that she gets frustrated and refuses it. she's been breathing out of her mouth all morning.

quick question about dehydration prevention since shes not eating well or wetting diapers like normal: should I get her pedialyte or mix a tiny bit of juice with water? or should I keep pushing the FM? at this point i feel like I shouldnt worry about the calories, and just be more concerned with her getting fluids any way possible
