Sorry- another H1Ni vaccine question - for those who have given it to their kids
DC got it yesterday, they are 10 months. The pediatrician said that since they got two doses of the seasonal flu vaccine, they only needed one of the H1N1, so we don't have to come back in a month for a second. I keep reading everywhere kids under 10 need two doses for it to be effective, has anyone else had their ped tell them their kid only needs one?

We haven't been able to get it yet, but I thought I read the same as you-that they would need two.

Re: Sorry- another H1Ni vaccine question - for those who have given it to their kids
I was told due to demand it will be very difficult to get a second shot but the immunity should be there. theoretically speaking if it is the same as the seasonal just with a different virus they should be good with one shot. Since after the initial double shot of seasonal they only get one. That is different viruses each year.

Re: Sorry- another H1Ni vaccine question - for those who have given it to their kids
I read the actual studies and basically for those children 35 months and under after 21 days only 55% of them had a strong immunological response. So really only half of them are protected. After the second dose, 100% of them had a strong immunological response.
The advice then is if you can obtain a second one - give it as you can be sure they are protected. If you cannot obtain a second one - chances are that they are somewhat protected but not fully.
I think it depends on whether the previous seasonal flu shots they received had an H1N1 similar strain that was sufficient to "prime" them for this vaccine.

That's what I just read too.

Re: Sorry- another H1Ni vaccine question - for those who have given it to their kids
My ped told me that all children should get a double dose but that my 3 1/2 yr old really will be immune to it if he is around it.
But my 9 month old def has to get the 2nd shot. She said that a baby needs more of a vaccine to build an immunity to it. That is why so many DTP's, etc are given to small babies.

Your ped is wrong. According to the CDC, today show, my ped and everything I have researched - children under 10 need 2 shots to have full immunity.

Thanks everyone, I sent an email to my aunt who is a pediatrician and I am waiting for her reply. I have a feeling he said this because they don't have enough to give two doses to everyone.

He can't do that though - he is required to tell you if you need a second shot whether he can provide it or not - otherwise it isn't proper informed consent. He should get his facts straight b.c if in fact he has enough and isn't giving 2 shots then a lot of children won't have full protection.
