Re: sorry if this is a stupid question but
I'm not really sure. I do know that high fevers can cause someone to lose their milk production never heard of it not coming in.

Me too, with either pregnancy. I'm told it runs in my family, neither my mom or my grandmother produced milk either, although my mom's sister did.
When I asked my OB he said it wasn't something to worry about, but then proceeded to tell me that it's not normal, back before formula the baby would have starved, etc. I still don't know if I need to be worried or not. Something to talk to my new OBGYN about I guess.....

It's very rare but does happen. Not sure what causes it.

Re: sorry if this is a stupid question but
Well, unfortunately, one thing that makes difficulties with milk coming in is having a C-section. I never would have though of it until my very good friend brought it up and we started thinking of all the moms we know, including herself, whose milk never "came in" and they ALL had C-sections.
It makes sense, if you think about it. When you body goes into labour and after you deliver afterbirth, milk glands start working because they receive a signal that the baby is out and needs to eat. (obviously, a very short, simplfied non-medical version of what I read up on the internet in "smart" articles) When you have a C-section, your body doesn't receive all the signals it needs since the baby is not "birthed" but rather taken out of you. So, you can say that the body is "confused".
Interesting thing is that women who go into labour naturally but end up with an emergency C-section have less difficulties than those with planned C-sections. I am guessing because they WERE in labour at some point so the natural process of birth/milk production started. Very interesting stuff, I tell you...
Also, as PPs mentioned, some women just don't get milk. It is extremely rare but it does happen. In the past, a woman like that would resort to getting BM from other moms or getting a wet-nurse.
Milk production works as supply and demand, so, most of the time, if you stick to it and keep offering the breast to the baby, it will come in with no problem. That's how nature intended it!

That does make sense. But I skew your results, both of mine were vaginal. I'm just a freak of nature I guess.

Re: sorry if this is a stupid question but
But I did have a c/s with my first, never went into labor, and my milk came in very strong and I EBF for one year..... While it sounds like a plausible explanation, in my case I had good results.

Re: sorry if this is a stupid question but
that does make sense! i guess that would also explain why my friend didn't have much either because her twins were premature - i think 10 weeks? she did get a little but SO little she just gave up

Were they c section?
cause even pre mature birth is labor and therefore she should have had milk?
