***SORRY LONG**Reasonable priced assisted living in suffolk county??
A few years ago my grandmother had a very bad fall. This was followed by multiple surgeries and a long stay at rehab. While she was there, the family all decided she could no longer live alone since I am the only one left in NY and was not local enough to her to visit daily. Her daughter sold her house and we moved her into a senior retirement complex that was next to an assisted living place. She lived there for a year and a half, paying about $4000 a month! Need less to say this huge expense was tearing through her house proceeds quickly. In addition, she was not utilizing all of the amenities available to her. She wouldn't take the bus, didn't go on the trips, didn't participate in the activities, etc. I still had to constantly go and visit her to help her with her meds, run errands, etc. So a little over a year ago I decided to move her to a much more affordable senior apartment complex closer to me. I hired an aide that comes three times a week to keep her company and help with the cooking and cleaning. It was working out great until recently. I think it is time for her to move into an assisted living residence. Some of the reasons I feel this way are because she refuses to take a shower so she only sponge bathes, she has been wandering at night through the halls, and she has set off the fire alarm multiple times trying to cook.
This is my dilemma...I need to find a place that is no more than $2500 a month (and that is stretching it) and allows a cat. Does anyone have any recommendations? The only places I can find are in the $4000 range which she can not afford. TIA

My MIL is in assisted living and they are pricey. I don't think you will be able to find a place for that price and I definitely don't think most take animals. I know it is not idea, but have you looked into a nursing home?

I agree, I think a nursing home is the way to go, but I don't think any will allow a cat.

I researched it for my dad back in 05 and it was going to run about 40-50K a year for what he needed. FTY: bathing assistance is extra in many places. I remember looking at Atria and not liking it, mostly not liking the menu in the dining hall, not the healthiest at the time. Sunrise seemed nice and if we ultimately went that route it would be Sunrise. Those are the only two I looked at because at the time they were closest to me.
We decided not to do it at the time mostly because of the $$$. He was 64 and at 40-50K a year, at that time, there was a possibility, figuring for yearly price increases, that his money could run out before the end of his life. We decided he'd continue to live with my brother.
Can you talk to her primary doctor about a nursing home? If she's wandering and has a medical diagnosis of dementia or another condition that is what can get her in. If her assets are not in a trust, most good places want a substantial payment up front and only when her cash assets run out will they take medicare.
I give you lots of My dad has definitely been on the decline these last 6 months and I think it's only a matter of time before I will be making the same decision.

Sorry you are going through this . It's hard, but once you start touring facilities, you'll feel less overwhelmed.
My grandmother is in an assisted living in Plainview, but we looked in Suffolk, too. The Arbors (east, west, and happauge) were all actually very nice and if you wanted to do a shared room, the cost was much less than a single room. The rooms aren't that big, maybe the size of a hotel room with 2 double beds. The arbors also had some deal if the resident was a vet or a widow/er of a vet.
You can also negotiate the price. We were able to negotiate a price lock for 2 years and got the initial fee (one month's rent) waived.
The place my grandmother is in does allow cats. But that's probably for single, not shared rooms. If you want any more info, fm me.
Good luck :)

Re: ***SORRY LONG**Reasonable priced assisted living in suffolk county??
She was at Atria, but not at the assisted living facility, she was in the retirement apartments. It was about $4000 a month without the nursing supervision or aides. Crazy!
Regarding assets she really has none! She gets a few pensions and of course social security money. All totaling under $3000 a month. She also gets about $4000 every 3rd month from an annuity. How would that all work if we go the nursing home route? Would she be able to get assistance from medicare? Thanks again.

If you think that places in LI are expensive, imagine NYC!
After much soul searching, we decided to have our grandmother stay with my mother and we hired 2 aids. It was more affordable that way. It made my grandmother happier and my mother as well because she didn't have to run all over the place!
Would you consider her moving in with you?

Try Babylon Beach house. It was very affordable and I think they allow animals since they have two that are the owners.
My grandmother was there and they took fantastic care of her. So much better than those pricey places *cough* Atria *cough*

I would but I don't have the room and my home is full of stairs which she can not handle.
