Sort of pregnancy related: Digital SLR Cameras
So we already purchased an HD camcorder, and we have a pretty good point and shoot digital camera, but I am a camera junkie and wanted to get a digital SLR camrea for those candid close up moments.... I've narrowed it down to the Nikon D60 Canon XSi and Olympus E520
The Olympus had the best reviews thus far...
I know the Nikon is big on these boards, and was wondering why, and if anyone has tested out the others!!!
TIA!!!

I bought the Nikon D40 and I'm really happy with the way the pictures come out. Plus the camera is so easy to use!

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: Digital SLR Cameras
Nikon has a history of making quality cameras and lenses. Canon also makes very good cameras/lenses and will cost a little less. Here is a link with a review of the Nikon d40 - I use this site alot when looking for reliable info
If you are looking to take up close shots, it will have more to do with the lens you choose. I would look for somthing in the 135mm range with a large apperature - f2.8 A faster lens will allow you to get more of the candid shots because you can use it in lower light situations and it will create a nice shallow depth of field that often enhances candid shots.

You probably already know this, but the longer the lens the more likely you are to encounter "camera shake" which works against you in a candid situation. You may want to look at lenses with image stabalization or get the fastest lens you can find so you can set you shutter speed higher. A general rule of thumb (very general) is your shutter speed should not go below the focal length of your lens without the use of a tripod.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: Digital SLR Cameras
We have a Canon XTi. I know Husband spent a lot of money on extra lenses. I'm not tech savvy and dislike switching lenses/zooming to get the picture to fit. I usually use our simple powershot. DH uses the more fancy camera.
Recently DH bought a new Sony DSLR that is supposedly better. I've felt too sick due to morning sickness that I haven't paid attention to his new gadget purchase. He seems to think this camera is much better than the Canon.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: Digital SLR Cameras
I swear by newegg.com reviews.... that website's customers are almost exclusively technogeeks (like my DH) who take photography seriously (or are professionals), build their own computers... you get the point.
see what they have to say about the cameras! I'm sure it will be more thorough and enlightening than any of us mere mortals can contribute (it's also an amazing website... very fast shipping, very good customer service, and good prices)

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: Digital SLR Cameras
My DH has the new Olympus 520 and loves it. He did tooooons of shopping around, reading magazines about cameras etc, and found this was the best one for him. He was also choosing between the Cannon XSI and Nikon. The Olympus is the smallest of the 3, the most portable and is the only one that has lens stabilizer (that works) built into the body of the camera. Thus lens's don't cost as much as with the other two cameras and image stability isn't as much of an issue. That being said any of the three brands will give you great pictures....if you know how to use them. Have fun!

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: Digital SLR Cameras
I think we're getting the Cannon XTI. I've left DH in charge of this. He's been doing a lot of research and says this camera gets excellent reviews.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: Digital SLR Cameras
I would get the Nikon. I have the Nikon D40 with the 15-135mm lens. I love it!!!! I am able to get some really great shots from it.
I would like to upgrade to the D300 because I am sort of outgrowing this one but it has treated me well
