Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
So how are you ladies handling everything that is going on. My DH works in the banking world, and thank g-d for now has been somewhat spared. DH is a worrier by nature so is freaking out a lot about all of this, he's freaking out about his job, about even getting a bonus this year, and having the baby come, and whats going to happen after my maternity leave is over...we're not sure if I'm going to want to go back to work or not, and he doesnt' want to leave her with anyone, yet at the same time I love the thought of brining home a paycheck....Anyhoo, how are all of you dealing with what is going on, is it affecting your future plans????

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
It's not affecting our future plans [in the job market] since DH and I are both in law enforcement. The thing that does scare me is how our economy and value of the American dollar keeps continuing a downward spiral.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
I, myself, am in the Financial Svcs industry and have the same concerns as your DH. Luckily I am somewhat insulated from the current "goings on" because of the particular nature of my division....HOWEVER, I am still scared.
And given that I am the one going out on Maternity, I am even more scared
My DH luckily has a very stable job/career (he is a Federal Agent) so our concern is more with my job, as we do count on my salary. We could "get by" w/out it, but we don't want to just "get by".
This economy has everyone on edge and I think the thought of having to provide for another life is making it that much more scary for us.
Don't have any answers, but at least you know you're not alone!

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
Having worked in advertising, and more specifically the online world since 1999-- I am always afraid of the economy, having been laid off twice in my career.
Now, that I freelance and plan to stop at the end of this year anyway-- it's not really bothering me as it would if I was still working full time and intended to keep doing so. I also think that DH's job is pretty secure-- he works in IT, and is the only person at his company with his skills and expertise for the area he manages. Plus, he has been there 10 years.
I am more worried in the sense, of what it means for ALL of our futures-- the value of our dollar, the value of our homes, etc.
So, it has not changed our plans-- the thing that would affect us the most, at this time-- is selling our apt here and buying a house on LI... we plan to do that sometime next year. But, if we sell low, then I guess we'll buy low too. Luckily, where I am-- because I am 2 miles outside of Manhattan, I think the area is somewhat insulated.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
My DH works in finance too but we are moving forward as usual with whatever it is we have planned. We still plan to sell our house and buy a new one. We won't live in fear, but then again, if DH got laid off we would be ok for a good amt of time financially, so that's why. We are just too excited about the baby coming to focus on the negative economy...this too shall pass.

thats exactly what it is, we're very much used to not just "getting by" and it would be a huge life change for us if that happened...we're still going as status quo, but my husband I know is carrying a huge burden of worry on his shoulders!!!

Same with us, we have a nice little "egg" that we've never touched, so we would be fine, but I think DH is just more worried about how fast the $$$ would go with a baby and the expenses that go along with it...

I totally "get" you!!!! This is exactly how we are. We like to be able to go out to nice dinners and take vacations to Europe (not that I think we'll have time on our hands for all of that...lol) but we don't want to have to cut back as much as we would HAVE to if I wasn't working. I also want to be able to give my child everything and know that if, God forbid, a tragedy struck, we'd be ok...It's just SO much to worry about right now!

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
Neither of us work in finance, so I'm not soooo worried about our job security, but we also don't now whether I am going to return to work after the baby. We don't have the family option for childcare so it will depend on the cost of daycare vs. how much I bring home. But our worry is that we still rent in the city with the intention of buying something w/in the next 2 years. We also need to buy a car...just lots of big things, plus the base cost of just having and raising a baby. It's all sooo much to absorb and if we do it all on one salary, I just feel like we're never going to get ahead. We have a nice savings and constantly contribute and are on point to be able to afford a home within this time frame, but with the economy as unstable as it is....you never know and this worries both of us.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
I have a state job therefore, the economy has little impact on me or my salary...and well DH...his job has not been effected yet. I will be going back to work after maternity leave. We are just cutting out some home improvements now...that's all.

We haven't changed our plans. In fact, we made an offer on a house this weekend, but since the sellers were being completely unreasonable, we walked away. If we're lucky enough to find something we like, we plan to buy a house. I completely understand why people are worried though.

Honestly this gets me sooooo ANGRY!!!! We bought a house a year ago and were looking to get another one...don't ask....with the prices slipping so much we realized we could have afforded a much bigger one...anyway the one house we were very very intersted in the seller thought it was still 2000 where the prices were through the roof and her house needed MAJOR work and was not budging, suffice it to say the house was on the market for a year and a half and just recently sold for a lot less...I dont' get how ppl are still living in la la land..things are not has good as they used to be!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't even begin to tell you how pi$$sed off I was at the sellers. First of all, the house was overpriced. I'm very confident that they listed it too high b/c we actually looked at 2 houses in that subdivision a year ago. In fact, we put an offer on one of them, which was significantly larger and nicer than this one. We knew exactly what was similar and different about this house compared to the other ones that sold in the neighborhood.
We put in an extremely fair offer, probably too generous. The sellers went down $3,000 from their asking price. After going back and forth one more time, it became obvious that the sellers were living in a dreamworld and weren't willing to negotiate. I'd be shocked if they get the price they're looking for. Even our agent agreed that our offer was very fair and that we should walk away. It sucks though b/c I'd love to be done with this process. We've been looking for over a year.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
I work in banking as well and luckily my company is one of the few that's still doing ok. Still I WORRY! Fortunately my DH does not work in the financial industry, otherwise I think I would be freaking out right now.
This is worst I've ever seen

that is what DH and my mom (also in the financial world) is saying, she has over 25 years of experience and doesn't remember it being this bad... Thankfully DH is at a European bank that isn't getting the brunt of all of this, but still hurting...

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
I work in real estate private equity. I'm hit double by real estate and banking. If I get laid off, I figure I will just spend more time at home with the baby. I don't expect much of a bonus this year.
Fortunately DH is a surgeon and not affected by the economy.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
You know its sad when being a stay home mom is now a luxury these days. DH and I are planning for me to take 1/2 the school year off Jan to June and for me to come back in September. I can't see staying home beyond that. We really need both checks and my insurance is WAY better than his. To be honest I don't even knw how we're gonna make it that long with 1 paycheck! XOXO BOTB

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
I work in a job which is very much effected by how the economy does. If my clients are having cutbacks and slowdowns in hiring, I don't have anywhere to place my candidates and therefore make no $$. It's hard but so far I've been maintaining. It's up in the air whether or not I'll go back to work after this baby is born in the Spring. I'll always work, just perhaps not for someone else.
DH works for a company which has clients based in both the finance and oil/gas markets. So far, so good but you never know.
We're not overly worried per say but it is in the back of our minds. We haven't really changed much but we are conservative spenders to begin with.

Re: Sort of pregnancy related: the economy
definately feeling it.. our teams raises depend on commission through the year and for some reason we keep getting undersold no matter how good a rate we get or how many markets we go to....
i have to work- the nest egg- while saved- will start to be depleted in paying for daycare when it starts
and its frustrating to see how much house prices dropped, towns that cost too much are now avail. but we wouldnt get enough back on our current house
