Sort of Spinoff to Speech Therapy: At what point do you start to worry?
DS is 19 mths old and most of his words are still jarbled and cannot be understood by outside people. He has a few words that are "real" words.
He asks "Was dat?" constantly and has suddenly become VERY interested books.

I am wondering the same thing. I just said to my DH this morning that maybe we should have our DS evaluated. He is 20 months and has a few words and alot of sounds but I dont know if it is enough for his age.

I'd probably go for an evaluation at 20 mos (DS is only 16 now)...but the eval is free so it cant hurt

Re: Sort of Spinoff to Speech Therapy: At what point do you start to worry?
I had the same problem with my oldest..I took him to be evaluate at 2 years old...He attended a special daycare soon after..but I removed him because he was in a classroom with severly challenged toddler. He started talking normally at 3 years old and hasn't stop talking since..LOL...It won't hurt to have your DC evaluated, however don't let anyone try to force you put your DC in a program..I was a young mother and didn't know better... Research is the key, sometimes children talk later than others..

Noah is 19 months and is no where CLOSE to that.
He doesnt even babble except for two constanant sounds and his noises are not as much as a typical toddler either.
My Ped said at his 18 month if he didnt have 2-3 words to call. He has no words so did.

Re: Sort of Spinoff to Speech Therapy: At what point do you start to worry?
DS' speech issues are paired with other issues, this is why I called EI. I waiting until he was 18 months. At 15 months, his PED mentioned EI. Because he could have been just a "bit" behing at 15 months (being still close to 12 months), I waited. At 18 months it was obvious that he had a speech delay.

most speech therapist will not evaluate before 2 yo...
but I woud start to worry probably before then..
please know that your local DOH is responsible for early intervention services and costs for kids at two then responsibility switches to your local school district assumes responsibility at age 3.

Re: Sort of Spinoff to Speech Therapy: At what point do you start to worry?
Speech therapist here...If he has a few words I wouldn't be worried just yet. At that age their speech is not expected to be very intelligible. If he consistently says something to refer to something I would count it as a word regardless of how it's pronounced. Even a 2 years old only 50% of their speech is expected to be intelligible to a familiar listener so even less by an outside person and even less at 19 months. The milestone for words is generally 10-15 words at 18 months. Unless you also have concerns about his comprehension I wouldn't worry just yet.
About EI...even though it is federally mandated it depends on the state you live in whether or not it is free. Luckily it's free in NY, but in NJ it is on a sliding scale. Not sure about other states.

I was wondering about this too. DD will be 15 months on the 21st and she only says mama and dada. She understands what we are saying and follows directions (most of the time ), but has no other words....Just babbling. Sometimes she babbles a certain way and she sounds like she is talking in a different language.

Actually, it does depend on the state. I'm not sure about GA. However, in NJ the evaluations are done at the public's expense. but the services vary based on income. My son qualified for EI and we had to pay $47 per hour out of pocket based on our share. It was quite expensive so we decided to find a private PT and pay through insurance which was only $10.
here is a link for georgia to look into it

Because he is a boy, I would't worry too much at this point. Most boys are late speakers. It amazing how true that "old wive stale" is (there are exceptions of course) Does he understand and follow direction? If he does don't worry... He will come around with speech in due time. Just make sure you talk to him a lot and read to him often. Talk to him a lot about his toys and whatever he likes to do.
My son didn't start speaking till he was 2. And then it was literally overnight. The week following his 2nd birthday he went from vocabulary of 6 words to 20 and by 2.5 was speaking in full coherent sentences, 5-7 words each.

Re: Sort of Spinoff to Speech Therapy: At what point do you start to worry?
I started to worry at 23 months when he wasn't saying much of anything. He had not progressed from when he was 18 months. he wasn't even saying mama I'm kind of sorry I waited so long, but not really since if I did it earlier, he may not have qualified because his receptive was very good. But, who knows.

It's great that he's asking questions even if they are not 100% clear. Ask your Ped. for the EI # and give them a call. Don't worry because he's trying it's when they say nothing is more concerning. G/L
