Sort of spinoff to the dog attack article ...
I just wanted to share a story. About a month ago I was visiting my parents and we brought my dog to the bay side of Robert Moses field 5, since dogs are not allowed on the ocean side from March through October. Anyway, I noticed a woman with two larger dogs (a Rottweiler and some type of shepherd) off leash a couple hundred feet ahead of us. I didn’t think much of it since I see people down there all the time with dogs off-leash, and kept walking, even though my dad kept saying we should get off the beach. All of a sudden the shepherd turns around and starts bolting towards us. At first I’m thinking he’s excited to see another dog and wants to play, but the woman gets up and starts screaming bloody murder that he’s an old dog and not friendly. So I start moving my dog away, and just as the other dog jumps on mine (with his mouth open) the woman catches up, grabs him and drags him off my dog. She kept apologizing saying she didn’t know we were there, and I was just in so much shock I didn’t say anything – I just wanted to get my dog out of there. Of course 5 minutes later I was screaming that I wanted to go back and beat the ever living cr@p out of her, but my parents luckily restrained me because no good would come of that. As we were driving away we saw her and I tried to get my parents to pull over to scream at her, but by that point it was long over with and again, not worth it.
I’m so angry with myself for assuming everything was ok. I guess my warning, which many of you probably know, is don’t assume just because someone has their dogs off-leash that they are safe. And please, if you’re dog is not friendly in any way, don’t leave him off leash in a public place, even if you think you’re alone. There was even another family, with small kids, on the beach that day. How can someone be so careless? I still get angry when I think about it. My poor pup just sat there wagging his tail as it was going on because he thought it was play time!

That's what kills me, part of me thinks about how naive I was in assuming it was a safe situation. The other part of me thinks was I really that naive considering WHO DOES THAT knowing their dog is not friendly with other dogs AND there is a family with small children about 50 feet away from them! But lesson learned ... always err on the side of caution.

I know exactly how frustrating it is to not say anything at the time you should have and then beat yourself up for it.. She is a complete idiot.. Unfortunately there are so many irresponsible pet owners .. You will have you day with the next one.. I assure you!! Being your parents were there they might have gotten upset it it got brutal.. its probably for the best.. hang in there.. PEOPLE!!!!

First I want to say that I hope your dog is ok and was not hurt. And you to for that matter.
I absolutely agree with you. My husband sometimes walks my dog with the e-collar and it drives me nuts. I don't think its fair to put other people in a situation where they feel uncomfortable even though my husband has amazing control over the dog. But it's a DOG
People have to realize that even if they have their dog on a leash that you can't bring your dogs face to face especially if they don't know each other. They are animals and we don't know whats going on in their heads. They could be having a bad day and just snap.

What was kind of sweet about the whole thing is that my parents aren't really pet people, but my dad (who is in his 60s) got into position to attack the other dog (the Rottie) if it started attacking my dog too! They love my little guy.

Thank you. Fortunately he was fine. The dog went to bite mine, but the owner dragged him off before he had a chance. My dog thought they were just playing, the poor thing!
With my nieces, we're very careful with our dog. He's the sweetest thing and wouldn't hurt a fly ... BUT, he's an animal and you just never know.
