Agree. I'd use "big boy pants" just the same if the men on this site were being overly sensitive...oh wait, kitten pictures...hmm...
I digress, anyway I also use "scream like a little girl" to refer to the high-pitched scream. but I'd use it for it for both sexes if it was warranted.
"Acting like a girl" said in a derogatory manner isn't something I'd say. I'm not a fan of using the p-word to refer to being a wimp but I'm sure I've uttered the phrase before. I do think using those words *can* reinforce the concept. Now that you've posted this, I do see your point.
But honestly, woman being the weaker sex is so far removed from my thoughts that it's a laughable concept if someone were to say that to me. Maybe it's because I grew up with 3 sisters - all of us are pretty strong personalities.

Great article! I always try to think about those things and hope to be really thoughtful as aparent about what i teach (overtly or subconsciously) about gender.
I really don't like "stop whining like a girl"...as a PP stated it makes it sound like its negative to be like a girl.
I would want my boys AND my girls to be both strong and sensitive.

I think that the only thing/person that can set me back as a woman is ME!!!! I hold my destiny no one else and what someone else says cannot do it either.
I work in a predominantly male field and at almost 40 I am just as successful as the men around me. Do I worker harder than them...nope I work the same as them. Maybe in the beginnign I had to work a bit harder but once people see your work ethic then woman or man they reward the competant employee.
So someone saying "put your big girl panties on" will not hold woman back!!!!!!
