So should we be expecting a spike since Mother's Day is here?
I would think so. Almost everyone I speak to has Mother's Day plans with extended family, in the house, either cooking or ordering in and think I'm crazy that I'll see my mom from her porch that day. I'm an essential worker , so I go out to work, but of the people I know who are working at home, they are all going out most days, supermarkets, home depot, target, cvs for things to do. I have friends who visit their parents who are in their 80s everyday. So yeah they may be "staying at home" but that just means not going to the office or school.
Yes this is exactly it. I know people who go out every morning to get coffee- not from a drive thru but into a local shop to order coffee and get a pastry. It's easy enough to make coffee at home, but they need to get out they say. I mean, I will still get a Starbucks if we are out driving around and I find a drive thru that doesn't have a 3 hour line (which lately is impossible anyway) but I am not going every day for my daily coffee while I work at home. People are still going to store to "get out of the house" People are still socializing with neighbors and yes, having family over. So that is exactly what this is This isn't the person who stays in completely except for a bi-weekly grocery run I don't think

Meanwhile I have to go physically to work, where another co-worker just tested positive yesterday , lost count how many at this point, but I still won't go to the grocery or drug store, I do instacart every week. So maybe I'm the crazy one!

Source of New COVID Infections
It just means they aren't working. Nothing else. It doesn't mean they don't have contact with people who are working, people who are leaving their homes or that the patients themselves aren't leaving their homes. "Not working" means absolutely nothing.

So if this is the case then we might as well just reopen at this point. What is the point of keeping closed if we are just going to get it anyways. There is no other way around it.

I agree. And the longer this goes on the more rule breakers you will see. People who were totally strict in the beginning I see loosening up now, so forget about those who weren't strict at all, they are out licking door handles by now I am sure.

honestly yes we should just start to do the phase reopening. people are not going to listen and its slowly happening.
Maybe if we start the phases people will be still willing to follow the rules and try to still maintain some social distance.
I will admit I will most likely be one of those people visiting my parents. i dont go out to stores daily. Once a week to get my parents and myself groceries but you know what both my parents had it already (they just got tested for the antibodies and they have them) they dont visit anyone else so to me the risk is low and worth.
Come summer if summer camps are not open I work from home and I will be sending my kids to my parents some days during the week so they can have some fun and be outside instead of being stuck home with me while i work all day. And I feel no guilt about it!
ETA: I am one of those people who followed the rules but enough is enough. I want to be able to visit my damn parents and the way things are going I will never be allowed to visit them

Exactly. Because we have established that people are not chaining themselves to the bed - they ARE still going out and because there are only 3 places open EVERYONE IS AT THOSE 3 PLACES! So actually it's making it worse allowing people into crowded spaces. Open up small businesses at least with precautionary measures and help spread the people out.

You know what- I never thought about that. You are 100% right. Open more stores, take the load off the ones that ARE open- and just put measures in place. Makes so much sense.

I agree with a PP who said what does staying at home look like.
My dad technically "stays at home." He is on leave from work, but is still out and about every single day. He must go to 2-3 stores a day - Target, Costco, BJs, ShopRite, Stop and Shop, etc. He goes for long walks at the beach and/or nearby parks. He uses the public restrooms at the beach. He drops off groceries at my aunt's house because he insists she is high risk, meanwhile he is 65, a former smoker with 911 complications in addition to a history of high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Meanwhile, I leave the house once a week (or less) to go grocery shopping. My DH has left the house like 3 times in 8 weeks and my DS has not left the house at all.
Right. My mom “stays home” & doesn’t ride buses or trains etc. But, she hangs out with my brother who is an essential worker, and she goes to stores at least a few times a week, touches her mail & packages right away, etc... so she could still catch it easily even though she “stays home”, doesn’t work, etc.

Source of New COVID Infections
I doubt somebody who has been on the planet for 30-50-70 years would seriously lower their immune system in 8 weeks.
After I gave birth to my children I was basically a hermit for 2 months and I didn’t become seriously ill anytime after returning to work.

Re: Source of New COVID Infections
Everyone can speculate how people are still getting it...but my husband was just diagnosed yesterday.
We have not seen anybody.
He has not gone to any stores, in fact he hates going ever.
We have not conversed with any neighbors except from across the streets.
My kids have not left the house and have not seen any family.
I have gone to the grocery store and target when needed. I always wear a mask and sanitize when I leave and when I get home.
The ONLY prospect I can really think of is he DOES go to his office/warehouse. He owns his own printing business and they have been working with whatever jobs they have been getting. They are not serving the general public and have been working with very reduced staff (maybe 7 people max). They all wear masks and take proper cleaning precautions. Some may not agree but the business would literally go under if they just stopped business.
Nobody in the office has had it or has it now.
We do take out maybe once a week, we obviously still get deliveries and groceries.
So honestly I have no real idea how he got it.
I am sure he will be fine - he is on day 6 and is just sleeping a lot. I dont have any symptoms and I am hoping the kids are OK.
He is quarantined in our bedroom - I am sleeping on the couch.

Hmm- maybe one of his coworkers had it and was asymptomatic? So strange. Glad he's not too sick. Hope he gets better soon!

Don’t listen to people and their stupid sweeping statements. I feel like those are fear driven comments and mostly come from the ones who want to bunker down for months on end. Nothing else matters but Covid. Not other hurt, crisis or death matters. If they believe people are really not staying home and lying, it supports these extreme measures for months on end.
You and your DH did nothing wrong. I hope your DH feels better and I pray you and your family don’t get sick.

I don't want to sound unsympathetic because I am truly sorry you are going thru this and I don't think that what he is doing by going into work is wrong, but if my husband was going into the office and there were 7 other unrelated people there I would 100% assume that he got it from one of them, mask or no mask. As much as you may think none of those people had it, I would put money on it that one of them did and was just asymptomatic or not feeling that well. Look at all of these people being tested in meat plants who had no idea that they had it.

Completely agree, I definitely assume that was the case because there is really no other way UNLESS I picked it up from the store and brought home and was asymptomatic. I guess at this point it doesnt really matter...just want to get through this.

I also don't want to sound unsympathetic. I'm sorry you're husband is sick. I hope he gets better soon. That being said, he probably caught it from someone at his office.
You can't really say: We have not seen anybody.
You've seen people. You go to stores, he goes to his office. It sucks he caught it and I'm sorry about that, but you really can't insist he hasn't seen anyone when he's going to work. Your post makes it sound like the virus just crept through the walls and found you guys. We're all doing the best we can. I don't fault anyone for going to work and no one deserves to catch the virus because they don't stay home.
You were probably exposed before he started showing symptoms. I would up your vitamin C and take some immunity boosters.

Re: Source of New COVID Infections
Fair enough....I guess when I said we havent seen anybody, i meant to say we havent seen friends or family. I was just upset because all over these boards and facebook people are insinuating those that are infected havent been following guidelines and thats not really the case, with the exceptions of what I mentioned.

Since the very beginning, expert said 85% of the population are going to get this virus. So tbh unless your capable of never ever leaving the house, chances are you may come in contact or get it. But people still have to buy food, many also still need to go to work. It’s not surprising that more people have it, they have been saying this since the beginning.
I have complied, but my son still walks the dogs and DH has to go to work. So even though I haven’t gone anywhere or seen anyone, we can get it. The risk is just lower. I don’t even go for walks anymore because I reach a funk where it’s like “why even bother”. Don’t let the nonsense chatter get to you.
Hope this passes through quickly and with no harm.

I feel the same. I stopped caring. I stopped wanting to move. My body is becoming one with the couch and bed. I ache all the time from lack of movement And i just don't give a shit anymore. I'm so bored of walking I have zero desire.

Re: Source of New COVID Infections
Maybe sheltering in place has lowered our immunity and exposure to bacteria/viruses so that when we do go out, infrequently as it may be, we may be more susceptible to the virus. This is exactly what those "debunked" doctors from CA suggested.

Source of New COVID Infections
We're susceptible to the virus because it didn't exist until a few months ago (hence "novel" coronavirus). We wouldn't have any immunity because we've never been exposed.
Absent of immunosuppressive measures, you don't weaken your immune system in 2 months.
OP, I'm so sorry. Your husband did nothing wrong. I would go into my office with 7 other people too if I had to. This was nothing but bad luck. I hope he recovers quickly (chances are very much in favor that he will).

Source of New COVID Infections
I think when people make those general statements about people hanging out with friends etc its because we are starting to see it happen more and more. The weather is getting nicer and a lot of people in my neighborhood have been walking around. We see groups of teenagers hanging out and groups of women who or obviously friends not living in the same household walking around.

Glad you DH is doing ok but you can’t say he’s not going anywhere but yet he is going to work. So he is out and about and very easily could have gotten it from co workers.
People do have the virus without being extreme sick. A mom on my sons hockey team has the antibodies but was never sick. Her DH got it and she slept in the same bed with him so she said she would be shocked if she didn’t get it and sure enough she has the antibodies.
If we really tested the #s would be much higher.
