Southern Vampire Series
Someone on here suggested Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire series as something to read after finishing Twilight. I'm almost done with the first book, Dead Until Dark, and while it is not intended for young adults like Twilight (lots of sex and violence), I'm surprised at some of the similarities between the two.
Without giving too much away, the main character is a woman in her 20's who can read the minds of everyone around her. The only person whose thoughts she is unable to read is Bill, the gorgeous new vampire in town who she quickly falls in love with. This is obviously the reverse of Edward being able to read everyone's thoughts but Bella's.
Other similarities I noticed:
-The vampires in charge are very similar to the Volturi.
-Just like Edward "dazzles" people, these vampires "glamour" people to get what they want.
-One character turns out to be a shapeshifter just like Jacob Black.
I would be very surprised if Stephenie Meyer had not read this series before she wrote Twilight.
Also, as the person who originally posted about this series said, the new HBO show True Blood which premieres on Sept 7 is based on these books and looks really good from the previews.

oh these books sound great. But i think i would spend the whole time comparing the book and characters to Twilight. Im going to hold off on these for awhile.
