Speaking & 2-year old Toddler Boys

My son will be 2 at the end of April and he talking, saying words here and there and there are some words he tries to say but doesn't really get it out correctly, but I know exactly what he's saying.

My question, is that OK that I know what he's sayiing, even tho its not coming out correctly? For example the word "truck" he'll say "tra" -- but I always renforce it by saying oh you want the "truck" or do you want the big truck or the small truck?

Can you share some words your toddler was/is saying at the age of 2?

TIA

From what I've heard, approximations are fine at the toddler ageChat Icon

My DS really could say most words by 2, but even so, I noticed a HUGE change in how he put sentences together, etc. I think 2 is a big jump with languageChat Icon

Re: Speaking & 2-year old Toddler Boys

I hate answering these posts because my son was talking in full sentences at 16 months. I lost track around 15 months of number of words (I had a list of over 250 words). Now at 22 months there is nothing that he doesn't say. His only issue is speaking in the 3rd person. It drives me nuts.

On the other hand my nephew barely said a word until he turned two, but he caught up super quick. Once the words started coming they came fast.

I think by using a sound over and over shows he is on the right track.

I have a 2 year old girl and she is pretty much the way you described your son. She says a lot of words, but most of them are not articulated well. I can understand them, but I need to act as translator to DH on most things.

Ex - she says ocks instead of socks - when I correct her she says it right.

She doesn't really speak in sentences yet - more like 2-3 word phrases.

Her ped just suggested we bring her to an ENT b/c she has a lot of ear infections and he is worried its holding back her language.

Yes, my ped told me that if they say the same thing to stand for the same object all the time, it counts as a word. DS does this also. Just turned 2 (today) and has a some words he says perfectly and a bunch that he has his own words for.

My son turned 2 in the beginning of March and was just as you described, and even in this one short month we have seen a major explosion of language. My thought was as long as he understands us and we are understanding what he is communicating to us, he is fine. People that don't know him might not be able to understand everything he says, but it gets more and more clear each day. I think this is the time you will start to see a real explosion with him learning new words every day and then starting to put them together for phrases and sentences. HTH

ITA and jacen is the same way. He's 21 months and he just recently had a bit of a word explosion. Some are very clear and some are not, but we understand him.

I don't think it's anything to worry about right now. Chat Icon
