Speaking of birthday cakes...

I am thinking of baking a cake and cupcakes for DD's 1st (I have the rose Bundt pan and matching cakelet pan).

The party is not going to be huge (probably under 30 people).

Am I crazy to bake the cake myself?

Not crazy. I did it for Andrew's 1st Birthday and had an ice cream cake. I plan on doing the same this year. I already bought the Wilton PanChat Icon I am going to do it every year. That is going to be my tradition.

Re: Speaking of birthday cakes...

Okay, I think I will do it.

Sabrina's birthday is February 10th so we are taking advantage of it being close to Valentine's day and using lots of pink, red and white decor with hearts and roses. Maybe a rose cake and cakelets all around it would be a nice addition.

But now what kind of cake do I make and can I make it the night before or should I get up at the crack of dawn and make it the day of the party?

Is lemon universally appealing? Chocolate?

I made the cake before because if you are decorating it, it should be cool before doing so.

Nope homemade cakes are great!

For my friend's bridal shower I did just that. The big bundt cake was chocolate the little rosettes were white cake (so everyone could have what they wanted). I arranged them all in a bouquet shape.

Re: Speaking of birthday cakes...

I think that is great to make your own cake. I think the day before would be fine (as long as you cover it well.)

Personally I'm not a big fan of lemon, not sure kids would be either...maybe stick w/ vanilla or chocolate (if you know there's no allergies).

Oooh, Sam, depending on how many people all say yes, I might ask to borrow your cakelet pan so I can make more in less time.

Do you have pics from Laura's shower? I would love to see how the cake/cakelets looked all arranged.

Not at all I LOVE homemade cakes - usually they are much better than the store bought ones - esp when the person making them can cook!

Chocolate is always good - what about the main cake in Chocolate and the cakelets in a white cake
