Speaking of school...
I want to become a college professor but have heard you need to have a PhD or DBA (in business -- I currently have an MBA).
Has anyone ever done either of these programs? And if so, can you do them part time?
Thanks!!!

Re: Speaking of school...
I am getting a doctorate part-time. Some PhD programs are available part-time, but may take quite a while (my father took 8 years part time). Many of the subject area PhD programs are not available part-time.
I am adjunct teaching now at a college since I am close to finishing my doctorate, but it is really, really difficult to get a full-time tenure-track teaching position at a college or university, and generally the pay is less than high school teachers (on Long Island at least!). The quality of life can't be beat (in my opinion), since you are only teaching a few classes a semester, but where I work we get over 500 applicants for each position. You do still have to continue getting published and doing research though.
You could possibly teach with an MBA--I know someone teaching at Suffolk with just the MBA--but it has gotten more competitive. If you could start adjunct teaching somewhere (easiest if you know someone as an in) that would be good, because without experience teaching in a college it would be near impossible to get a job.
On the positive side, I am really excited to be able to adjunct teach online when I finish my doctorate, so even if I take some time off with kids I can be teaching 3 classes a semester online for extra money. Each class is not a lot though--for me teaching grad classes $3500 per class for a 3 credit class.

If anyone is considering it, it is definitely great to start your doctorate now since it will probably take 5-10 years, and where I work they don't usually hire without doctorate in hand (not in progess). My dad's a college president, my mom's a college dean, and I work at a college, so I know way too much about this.
They definitely aren't in big demand in this area of the country. Private colleges pay VERY little, but for public colleges around here as I said we get 500-1000 applicants per tenure-track position, and it generally starts in the low $40,000.
It also depends on how much published research you have had, grants, etc. The more you are doing now, and the more experience you have adjunct teaching at the college level, the better your chances will be when you finish the doctorate.
The chances of someone getting a position with an MBA where I work are slim to none since we have so many people with doctorates applying, and part of the school ranking has to do with the number of professors with terminal degrees, which an MBA is not.
