special ed teachers- IEP question

I'm a new teacher and like to consider myself an expert... but ......

I am looking at this student's last years IEP because his annual review is this week. It doesn't list ESL as a related service, but he does attend ESL twice a day everyday. Isn't ESL supposed to be considered a related service?

If yes, should I include it, and check off the box at the beginning that the IEP has been modified?

Also- it says he gets counseling and speech in SPANISH and that his classroom instructions is in SPANISH- Both those services and my classroom instruction is given in English- so I put English instead. Was I supposed to do that?

Thanks soooooooo much, the IEP is due tomorrow! Chat Icon

Are you a NYC teacher? I do not put ESL as a service... but on page one of the IEP you will see a box...Monolingual services with ESL. That box should be checked. ESL is not considered a special ed service. On all other children without IEP's the box - monolingual services without ESL is checked. Also on the goals I say...In one year, Sal will blah blah blah with 80% accuracy determined by teacher data and formal and informal assessments using esl methodologies, mutli-sensory approaches and modified tasks. I hope I helped!

ESL is not an IEP driven service and that's why it wouldn't be under related services. We use IEP direct in my district and ESL isn't something that we put on the IEP. It's something that we would mention at the meeting and then it would be in the minutes of the IEP.
As far as the services being delivered in Spanish, I have no idea! That's so strange that it would say that. Do you have a case manager or psychologist you could ask for help?

Thanks to both of you! Chat Icon

There are people in my school I can ask about the spanish/english service question but tomorrow will be too late since the meeting is tomorrow. I am going to make 2 copies- one that says english and one spanish- and I will use whichever one they say.

One more thing.. Was I supposed to remind the related service people- speech and counseling for this kid- about the IEP? In the past the guidance counselor has approached me and been ready with the goals but this is the first time I have a student who also sees the speech therapist- Was I supposed to remind her? If you sent home the invitation letter then you must let all the service providers know.

In my experience, ESL is not a related service provided through special education, that is why it is not found on the IEP. As far as the Spanish/English issue, I would put English if the services are to be provided in English next year. If that is not the case, I don't see why this couldn't be changed pending final determination at annual review.

And I wouldn't worry about the other service providers. As long as they are informed of the date of the meeting, I can't see why you would need to reminded that their goals are due.

ITA with the above. Many students that are not special education students receive ESL. it is not a special education service.

I work in NYC too. Its very much fend for yourself. But...if you need help let me know. Things are going to change big time next year. Also- if you send home the invite letter all service providers should get copies. Then you can prove you told them. Also- you cannot blame it on the AR date, because most of the time teachers are trying to make AR earlier. Let me know if you need anything!
