I have a master degree in reading K-12..I am interested in getting a special ed certificate without having to get another masters..Is that possible? If so, do you know of any online programs? Thanks in advance

Re: special education certificate
I just finished my certification for SWD. I had my transcripts evaluated by Boces and only needed about 3 classes, which I did online. I'm not sure if they are still doing it like that, but it's worth a shot. I also looked at Touro for online classes.

Re: special education certificate
with the NEW Special ed. requirements. You need to be certified in a content area with special ed. Such as English, Math, Social Studies....

Re: special education certificate
I just finished my Special Education extension last May. I took 4 classes, the CST and a Autism workshop through Dowling.
However, one professor did mention that they are changing the rules and doing away with allowing people to take 4 classes. I heard that this rule was suppose go into effect this past fall. And also at the Secondary level you do need to be certified in a content area, as the pp said. I am certified Special Education/Spanish grades 5-12.
I would just call BOCES and check the regulations as I have heard they have/are changing.
Good luck!

Re: special education certificate
Yes you can do this! I just went to the UFT for info on this and you can get a generalist special ed cert.
I teach health and I want a secondary cert in spec ed. I have to get my transcripts reviewed to see if I need to make up any classes, and there are 4 special ed courses and an autism workshop that you need to complete. I applied for the cert on the teach online website...I still have to pay and then send my transcripts to albany. I will be taking my special ed courses through the UFT probably...and any courses that I have to make up online somewhere or at a community college.
Good luck!
