speech delay question
My DS is 20 months. Has about 5 words that he uses. I spoke to ped last visit and he said to wait till DS is 2 before calling EI. He felt he might not qualify because he has no other delays and understands what you tell him perfectly.
I was ok with it at the time, but now I am worried I am not doing the right thing for my boy.
I was also lead to believe that if I had him evaluated now and he didn't qualify, I would have to wait 6 months before having him evaluated again.
Any advice! TIA

Re: speech delay question
Don't wait.. DO it now. It is the perfect age. My son was almost 21 months old when he was evaluated and he got services. They said it is the best age... My son understood everything we said too. You can call them yourselves and set it up.

Re: speech delay question
He is a boy an he is only 20 months old: he is not delayed.
My son didn't speak at all until he was 2 years old. Knew a few words and understood everything, but didn't speak. Once he turned two: BAM! Started talking up a storm. It was almost overnight.
Boys are notoriously late speakers. Just continue talking to him constantly and he will come around.

Re: speech delay question
I agree with.above poster. My oldest DS was evaluated at 2 bc when I.originally called at 22 months, I.was told to wait bc the criteria at 2 is much more & chances are he would qualify. Now my youngest is 20.5 months & our speech teacher told me to wait until my guy is 2 bc again the criteria is much more stringent. The EI department is being very picky with giving out services bc they are on budget cuts.

Re: speech delay question
My 1st son was also slow to talk. Had 5 words he used regularly at 18 mos. The dr said watch for continual improvement between 18mos and 2 and wait until 2. He was very smart and understood everything. He could point out his letters, recognized some colors and stuff like that. By 2, he went up to almost 50 words. He exploded. So I waited some more and 2 mos later, I lost count of his words.
