It can.
We had Jack's snipped as early as possible (which was 2 months)

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
My son was tongue tied at birth, and not only was he a late speaker, he has some problems with his hissy sounds. He can not say S sounds, so instead of Snail, he says nail. He also struggles with D's and G's and mixes them up. He shows improvement regularly, but its not as good as it should be.
We get some speech therapy, but we hope to get more that he has turned three and a half. I am sure the two are linked, however the speech therapist that I have seen doesn't think its necessarily the case.

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
our speech therapist seems to think it did cause DS some issues now. He got it snipped at 6 months of age. Never had issues with the bottle but couldn't latch when I tried to BF.

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
Yes it can, thats what my ENT told us, Todd Jr was tongue tied and I had it clipped at 10 weeks, he was able to BF much better after it was clipped, before that he would get blisters on his lips and my nipples would hurt when he nursed.

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
DS is also tongue-tied, though he had no trouble latching. We're planning to have it snipped around 8-9 months, he has to have another surgery at that time so the surgeon will just snip it when DS is already under the anesthesia.

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
My DD was tongue tied and it didn't affect her eating, so the pediatrician recommended leaving it alone. By the age of 3-4 she had major spech problems and had to get it clipped then. Major mistake, I really wish I would have forced them to clip it early. I am due soon with baby #2 and have a new pediatrician. We already decided if is tongue tied, she is going to clip it right away.

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
DS is tongue tied, he couldnt not latch so he was FF. We took him to an ENT to have him evaluated and he said his should not affect his speech and so far it has not.
It really depends on the severity of it.

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
DD had a slight one... we decided to snip it early on... the dr said there was no harm in getting it done, so we figured better get it done now then regret it later... it took them not even a few minutes... we had actually went in for a consult and the dr decided he could do it right then real quick...

Re: Speech question for tongue tied baby?
i'm a speech therapist... it definitly can affect their speech... their tongue can't move as much as it needs to to make all of the different sounds. it depends on how bad it is, though- some kids can learn to compensate if its not bad. My DH was actually tongue tied and had it snipped as a preschooler- he was in speech therapy for a few years afterward, and now you would never know. From what i understand, the surgery is fairly simple and straightforward, and really can benefit the kids in the long run. let me know ifyou have any other questions
