Spent Most Of The Night In The Emergency Room---Scare Of My Life

Hi Ladies,

I cannot tell you the night that my DH and I had. Just to give you my background, I am pregannt via IVF with one baby. I just finished my 16th week. For a month or so I had some tiny spotting (so little and very dark like old blood) but that subsided two weeks ago. Well, I was woken up last night gy the "wet" (sorry, TMI) sensation and when I went to the bathroom I was bleeding...like a period (pinkish with a bit of red--no clotting and NO cramping at all). I paniked called my Dr's emergency line and my DH took me to St Charles. As soon as I got there they did a fetal heartbeat and I was relieived to know the babies heart rate was beating terrific at 160. Then I had an internal and the doctor said, yes..there is blood from the vag--- but your cervix is closed so that is good. Then the next hour waiting for a sono tech to come. Well...baby looked great, again heartbeat flickering away, measuring to the day (perfect) (head is down). I then waited for a final report and they said(the emergency room dr) all they can tell me its a viable pregnancy, everything looks perfect now and the sono shows no trace of the blood. Couldn't explain where it was coming from. He said I cannot make any promises what tomorrow brings but so far its all good.

We were home around 3:30 AM after getting there at 12:30 AM(not bad (St. Charles was GREAT). After a few hours it is now brown in color. I was told not to go to work til Wed. (great, since I am a Teacher and was supposed to go back Monday) and to relax. I have an appt (for 16 weeks) Tues anyway that I had at my OBGYN. Maybe he can explain where this period like blood all of a sudden came from at 16 weeks preggo. Do any of you have any guesses? I know they say after the first tri chances of miscarriage are slim but I am a nervous wreck EVEN THOUGH I got the heads up that baby looks perfect. This is awful!

So sorry for the longgg message I just need some tips, advice, thought..anything you knowledgable ladies might know.

Thanks a millionChat Icon

OMG!! Chat Icon So glad you and baby are OK. Sorry you had to trek over to the hospital but I'm sure it's better knowing that everything is still going well. Sorry you have to wait now to see the OB but it sounds like everything is OK. Alot of us have had breakthrough bleeding at some point during the first and second trimesters.Chat Icon

i am so sorry you had to go through all that! i would say just take it easy and later, if you feel like you are not comfortable with them telling you that there was no reason for this bleeding, you should consider seeing a specialist. however, i have heard of women having bleeding throughout all three trimesters - i am sure you will be okay Chat Icon

Did they test you for infection? Did you have s e x? Like you said chances are so small that something would happen now and your cervix is closed. I would try to relax but also make sure they are checking your cervix for shortening etc. Best of luck to you! Chat Icon

Re: Spent Most Of The Night In The Emergency Room---Scare Of My Life

I feel your pain! I was in the same shoes as you but I was only 12 weeks along! It was the day before Thanksgiving, I was having some spotting but then it got a little worse and was followed by unbelievable cramping. I really thought I was having a miscarriage but everything turned out to be fine for the moment. They said everything looked great, baby was fine and they couldn't explain where the blood was coming from. They said if I was to have a miscarriage there would be nothing I can do. So they put my on bed rest until my next appointment which happened to be a week later.

When I went into my OBGYN I told him everything that happened. He immediately did a thorough U/S and found out I had Placenta Previa! Placenta Previa is when the placenta is completely covering the cervix or laying next to it. My placenta was extremely low like less than 1 cm away from my cervix. A normal placenta is very high and away from the cervix. You should ask about it since 60% or more of pregnant women have this condition. It can be very serious but most likely it will fix itself. Mine moved up when I was 26 weeks and now I'm about to see my little man in about 6 weeks! I HTH...Take Care and Good Luck

Thanks to everyone who has been responding and to anyone else who will. The Dr told me and I see here in the report that my placenta is fine, no rupture/no placenta prevera.

Thanks again. Do you think two days off from work is enough or will my OBGYN tell me on Tues evening at my appt that I need a whole week? I hope not. My principal at work will be so pissseddd.

In the end you have to weigh out what's more important: your principal being ******? or your unborn child's life?

If the principal gets mad then oh well, that's being really selfish and inconsiderate of your time to recover. I would personally take the time I need to rest and make sure I'm well enough to work and be on my feet all day. After all, you are carrying a life inside of you, right now YOUR baby and YOUR health is a priority, not pleasing the principal.

Re: Spent Most Of The Night In The Emergency Room---Scare Of My Life

such a scary story!

I agree with the other poster...maybe there's an infection? or another problem?

Hopefully your OB will come up with a possible explanation.... although frequently they never figure out from where the bleeding is coming......

BUMP..Any other ladies go through this? I am still spotting since the incident Sat late evening but now it turned back to brown. I cannot help but worry even though they say the baby is fine. We go tomorrow to my OBGYN.

Re: Spent Most Of The Night In The Emergency Room---Scare Of My Life

At 14 weeks I started bleeding heavily, bright red blood.

In the end it was unexplained cervical bleeding however my cervix was closed as well. It was terrifying but baby was fine and nothing more from that point on. Sometimes these things just happen, although it certainly scares the parents to death!! Glad all is ok!! Chat Icon

I had the EXACT same thing.

Unexplained cervical bleeding at 14 weeks.

At that point I was put on pelvic rest just as a precaution.

Didn't bleed again the rest of my pregnancy and I have a healthy almost 1 year old today!! Chat Icon

This happened to my SIL at 16 weeks- same exact story as yours. It ended up being nothing and they couldn't explain where the spotting came fromChat Icon

Her DD is 17 months old and a holy terror but very much healthy and alive. Chat Icon

Re: Spent Most Of The Night In The Emergency Room---Scare Of My Life

Yes this happened to me
at 14 & 16 weeks

14 weeks was a lot of cramping pain and a whole lot of blood. But it went away pretty quickly with brown for most of the day..

16 weeks was just blood, no pain whatsoever and it happened the morning before my appt so I figured I'd let them know then.

I was put on pelvic rest and have been ever since.

I had a low lying placenta.. near the cervix

But all my reports show normal placenta, etc. It wasn't until the sono you could see the placenta was low. They didn't seem worried and they kinda blew it off

went to see the doc again today and my placenta has moved to the posterior and its higher. so it worked itself out.

But yes.. it has happened to me.
