Spin-off: Family member gifts
Does anyone have a family member(s) who make significantly more than you do and sometimes it seems like they are trying to one-up you with gifts?
DH and I always joke around about what his sister is going to give as gifts to whoever in his family so we look cheap.
Seriously, we don't really care because we are all close (heck his sister does our taxes so knows our situation), but we will give his mom say, a $50.00 gift for Mother's Day and she will buy her a designer LV bag.
For Father's day, we got his father a few t-shirts and a new bathing suit, she got him a flat-screen TV he can bring outside.

Are they really trying to one-up you with gifts, or do they just happen to spend more because they can?
The price / expense of a gift really shouldn't matter. I wouldn't worry if someone had more to spend and did. I certainly wouldn't take it personally... unless there was something else going on that made it look like they were trying to one up me or show off.

I had the same thought. Now I wonder if people in my family think DH and I are trying to one-up them... we make more (combined, of course) than any of our siblings (all single), and we give generously for birthdays or holidays. I hope they don't think we're out to make them look bad

I don't necessarily see it as one uping, but I can see how you would be bothered by it. I just think she does it because she has the money.

i would try not to be bothered by it just because they have more money and can spend more on gifts than you, doesn't mean you should think badly of them. it sounds like they're just being nice because they can be happy that your parents are able to get such nice gifts..
if they were rubbing it in your face then it would be different of course

If you re-read my post, I said we're not bothered by it. Just was wondering if anyone can relate though.

Re: Spin-off: Family member gifts
Dh and I both do well, and our gifts are always alittle more than what my other family members give. We are just very generous, and love to share the wealth in a sense. No one in my family thinks that of us, they know we just love to give cause we can :) sometimes it's not about how much you spend, it's about putting a smile on the person receiving it's face. I wouldn't read into it to much. I totally do it, cause I can.
eta...yes, I could totally see why ud feel that way though.
