Spin Off: Severe Allergies
What is your theory on why this is such a growing epidemic in our culture? The last two generations didn't have allergies to the extent that this generation has....there is more anaphylaxis and nut free classrooms than ever before. What have we done to our immune systems to cause such a dramatic misfire?

Re: Spin Off: Severe Allergies
While a part of me is predicting this: I will give you my thoughts-
Years back, things were not diagnosed the way that they are now and many things that are now known as allergies were thought to be other things. I think with the advancement of medicine and technology, we now know a lot more. For example, DD's milk protein allergy would have been lump diagnosed as colic when I was a baby.

Re: Spin Off: Severe Allergies
DS's allergist told me that it's a few things.
1 - People are more likely to pursue allergy testing rather than just ignoring the issue like tended to happen in the past. My brother would have been diagnosed now as being milk allergic and having reflux, he was called "fussy".
2 - In the case of peanuts, peanut oil is used in so many products now, we are exposed to it a lot more and at younger ages. There is a similar trend in Israel with sesame allergies due to increased use of sesame oil in their foods.
3 - The use of so many anti-bacterial products have made us as a society have less mature immune systems.

the only thing with #2 is that most children with peanut allergies can have peanut oil. I had NO CLUE this was the case until DS's allergist told us to go ahead...we stayed away from chick-fil-a with him b/c they only use peanut oil. All along it was fine. I guess its in the refinement process that makes it safe?? I know if his allergy was very severe we still would have stayed away...
I honestly think some of it has to do with withholding exposure.
It's along the theory of animal allergies...the earlier a child is exposed, the less chance of having a cat/dog allergy. But who knows...its scary!! DS has a mild peanut allergy and we always wonder about it since neither of us have it..

Re: Spin Off: Severe Allergies
My son has severe allergies. When speaking to a family member who is a pediatrician, she said because our children's immune systems aren't challenged enough they become hyper-sensitive to certain things and that is why there are so many more allergies. I'm sure I'm not explaining it correctly but that was her theory.
