Spin-off to Holiday Party...
Does your company foot the bill or do you have to pay?
When I worked corporate - we didn't pay a dime.
Now that I'm in a school district -- yeah right!
Dont know if I'm going to go this year - same place as last year - Wickers in Hicksville - for $50 a person, I was not impressed.
Also - it's the first night of Chanukah.

I teach also. Our union hs a holiday party and we get one drink and appetizers. You have to really make that one drink last or flirt with the union president.

Not everyone goes at school, but it's sort of "expected" and noticed

Nope. Mine is on Monday, and I have no desire to go either. We have busses drive us to the city from LI, and the party is from 7-12. The busses bring people home at 10 and 12. I will be leaving at 10.

Re: Spin-off to Holiday Party...
I teach, and we have to pay for our own party. I think it's $40 this year, but I remember it being like $75 last year. It's always somewhere new. I always go because we have a good time & it's nice (and funny!) to see teachers let loose.

Re: Spin-off to Holiday Party...
Our "holiday luncheon" is $38 pp this year
And then we have our in office party which everyone has to bring a dish (cook) for. I refuse to cook for these people so I usually order something from a restaurant and pass it off as my own - thinly veiled - because I really do not care if they find out I didn't cook it. They ask and I just "yeah, of course I made it" Anyway so THAT'S usually another $50 or so. PLUS we have to buy a grab bag gift and chip in for our boss' gift.
And same thing with us - if you don't go to either of the parties which is "expected" it is "noticed" that you didn't go and they ask why you are mad at the rest of the office.
Heaven forbid you should say it's too much money, they'll say "well you had a vote and an opportunity to suggest a cheaper place".
So annoying...

Re: Spin-off to Holiday Party...
I'm a teacher, and we have to pay too. Some years it's planned by someone who is good at finding a nice deal for a reasonable price, and sometimes it's planned by a person who finds something outrageously priced. Last year's was inexpensive but it was also BYOB.

Teacher here too.
Always paid.
Ours is a lot this year as well due to drinks being included. Considering I can't drink, I'm not goign and paying that price.

Re: Spin-off to Holiday Party...
We have a "happy hour" at a local bar. We just go to the bar and they get us a free drink voucher. That's it. We only pay for what we drink... not really a Holiday party, but I guess it's better than nothing!!

Re: Spin-off to Holiday Party...
Ours is free, during working hours, which is why I'll go. Open bar and buffet for 4 hours. They have buses taking us to and from as well. I'm not taking the bus because I intend to leave early. It's from 1-5, but I'm leaving at 4. So, we're taking a company car to the party, so none of us have to pay for the gas!! We are so cheap! hahahaha
