Spin off to the Jessica Alba topic on the celeb board

how do you identity yourself?

and do you think it's more of a north east coast thing to say.....

that you are Irish, Italian, Spanish etc

I lived in another part of the country- the west/mid-west and I don't think people added where they came from to American

My family has been here for so long, I tend to say I am Italian- but my Grandmother was born here- so come on- how Italian am I? and my Dad is Irish- I happen to have dark features- which makes me get this question alot

but I feel like I am really am just American- I can only speak english, I have no family living in another country

thoughts?

i'm 100% filipino and was born in the Philippines...however, we came to america when i was 2 so i am fully "americanized".

DH is 100% italian (his parents moved here in the 70's and then DH was born).

both sets of parents still speak the native languages. i feel bad for our kids...they're gonna be so confused with having to learn everything in filipino and italian! and when people ask them what they are, i'm gonna tell them to say they are filitalians! Chat Icon Chat Icon

The thing is, IMO, unless you are Native American, no one is really, truly, "American". Everyone has ancestry based somewhere else...so at what point do you stop acknowledging that? Two generations? Three? I don't have the answer... I'm just putting it out there.

Well, my ancestors have been in America for well over 100 years. Before that, I have a laundry list of "ethnicities" so I can't call myself anything else. Also, my moms grandfather was Native American. So....

I was going to say the same thing! I have 4 different european ethnicities in me! Also I consider myself American, 3rd generation Californian.

I think of myself as a mutt - Austrian, Polish, Russian and Romanian. I'll never let go of the generations above me b/c I love that I'm molded from so many great cultures!

so have mine- and my DH is part Native American

but what is so wrong with just wanting to be American? I can understand if you are 1 or 2 different backgrounds- but my DH is like 8 different things- and b/c of his name - most people just assume he is Jewish- which he isn't

I don't really know either- but I just feel like in this area- no one ever just says they are American- but if you lived in West Virginia- you would just say American???

I consider myself American with an Irish & Greek ancestry. My grandfather was born in Ireland but the rest of my grandparents were born here. I was not raised with any particular Greek or Irish traditions.

How do you really know where your ancestors came from 500+ years ago? Didn't people move around then also? I don't think it's wrong to associate yourself with the country where you are born.

Re: Spin off to the Jessica Alba topic on the celeb board

The thing is, if you answer "American" the other person usually says "No, I mean what is your background?". Then unless you are Native American, your answer can't be American. People want to know where your ancestors are from... they don't care where you were born.

My family has been here in America for over 400 years, but I would still tell them by background is German and English.

no I was born here but we still have all of the Siclian ways.. Much more then even American ways..

If that makes sense.. Our culture and traditions are not "american' but from the country where my parents were born.....

I was going to say the saaame exact thing... it's a given that you are an American, but if someone is asking you, you know that they are inquiring about your heritage.

I'm Irish and Polish... my kids will be 75% Irish and 25% Polish (shhh, don't tell Fh's very Irish and very Polish-predjudice grandmother... the woman thinks I'm a mick thru and thru Chat Icon )
