Just putting it out there.. I have Plantar faciitis in my feet. so I need arch support or my feet at all times or my feet KILL me!! And in general it's not good to walk barefoot for your feet...
I'd have a huge problem taking my shoes off at someone's house if they asked.

I was just about to post the same thing. I will still take off my shoes if asked, but I have specifically been told by my doctor not to walk around with bare feet. I always used to take my shoes off when I got home for comfort, but now, I always wear something. I have orthotics in my shoes as well for arch support.

We are not a shoes off household. Neither of us grew up that way, and it doesn't seem like many of our friends have shoes off households either.

Re: Spin-off to the Strange things post.."shoes off" homes

I grew up in a shoes ON household. My parents never took their shoes off and didn't like when I took my shoes off and left them on the floor. We would always state how uncomfortable it made us feel to go to other peoples houses and be made to take our shoes off. I swore that I would never have a shoes off home.

Fast forward to when I actually had an apartment and it was not a necessarily conscious decision, but we did end up creating a shoes off apartment. We would usually take off our shoes by the door and then it got cluttered so we got a shoe rack to put right there and people just assume they should take it off. We don't enforce it but we do have carpeted floors and once FIL and BIL got mud allllll over it and it was a pain to clean up (and still not fully gone, it stained permanently). So now I do cringe when people come in with wet or muddy shoes. I also have been reading more and more about how bad it is and if I can easily prevent toxins and other pollutants from being in my house and create a cleaner carpet- why not?

I do not have pets.

When I was younger, we had all wood and tile floors and now in my apartment, it is basically entirely carpeted. I think this also has a big impact on why my thinking has changed. It can't be cleaned as easily. If it was wood or tile, I think I myself would walk around with shoes more often but now, I don't like it with carpet.

Same here. I can walk about 100 feet barefoot before I'm in pain crouched over and walking like I am stepping on hot coals. Even having general slippers or flip flops won't work - I must wear my orthotics or Orthoheel brand shoes.

We're a shoes off house. I was vigilant about it when DS was crawling around, and even more so later when DH had cancer and almost no functioning immune system. But then we didn't have that many people over at that time either, so it wasn't a big deal.

These days, if someone refuses or balks, I don't push it. I do offer slippers and they are washed each time, but I don't make a fuss if they don't want to take off their shoes.

It surprises me how offensive this request is to some though. These are shoes--you aren't being asked to strip down nude.

We're a shoes on household. We should be off though - my carpet is 3 yrs old and already worn in high traffic areas.

I certainly don't think it's strange that other people are a shoes-off household though.

DH and I don't wear shoes in the house but that's mostly because we prefer slippers for comfort and I don't like to mop Chat Icon But guests can do as they please in our house. Some will remove their shoes because that's what they do at home but most don't and it doesn't bother me at all.

If I ever go to someone house for nicer occasion, like New Years Eve, I take off my street boots at the door and put on clean pumps that I would have brought with me. Just to keep the outfit together, you know! :) .

I have a question on this. Are the pumps shoes that have never been outside or do you clean the soles? I'm not being snarky at all I just don't see the difference unless they are inside only shoes....

Well, as a rule, I usually clean the soles of all my shoes before I put them away for the season. And if I am invited to someone's home for a holiday party, chances are it must be someone pretty important to me, so I will definitely make sure the shoes I will change into have been wiped. Chat Icon

However, think about it, EVEN if some DOESN'T wipe the soles, that dry shoe will still be cleaner than that wet boot people will come in from outside in the middle of the winter.

Re: Spin-off to the Strange things post.."shoes off" homes

growing up we (my parent's home) always had no shoes at home policy and it's still that way, it's actually most homes where I come from. I wish and would love to do the same at my home, but it's just not happening with DH and everyone else. DH thinks it's crazy to have no shoes policy and even more crazy to ask visitors to take their shoes off, so every time I tried it didn't last very long . One thing we often bicker about.
I honestly think it's disgusting to wear outside shoes at home, but ....

We have a strict no shoe policy and everyone knows it. My dh is asian so every single person (friends and family) are the same. If we have a big get together everyone automatically kicks off the shoes. The only time we don't is for my ds bday in may. We have a huge BBQ and people are in and out of the house.

We have one cat who is so neat noone even knows we have her lol I vaccuum every day so there is no evidence of cat. My kids are crumb spreaders, so I have to vacuum each night.

We have 2 huge area rugs in the LR and DR. The family room is wall to wall. The entrance is tile so the shoes stay there.

I have 2 small kids that are on the floors all day with their toys. Even with mopping and vacuuming you can't kill all he germs that dirty shoes bring in

I know i sound very anal but I'm not I swear lol
