So as more people are returning to the office, what are people doing if your child's school is hybrid or full remote on the days that you have to go in to the office?

My DH has to go in to work 5 days a week so that leaves me to deal with the kids. My younger child has an every other day schedule and my older child only goes in once a week.

The last 2 weeks I have used a few vacation days, worked from home a few days and my mom came to watch them 2 days.

I can't keep taking days off and also cannot depend on my mom every week bc she has things that she needs to do and my siblings are also looking to her to help with their children too.
Are people having babysitter's come to the house or finding a day care? My DCs are 8 and 11 so I know they won't want to go to a "day care"

Spin off to when will you return to office- school related

It's easy for me to work from home since my job doesn't require that I need to be in the office, so if my boss decided that we're going back in January, but my son's school is still all virtual or hybrid, she would be fine if I worked from home on those days.

Re: Spin off to when will you return to office- school related

I'm spending half my time in the office and half at home. Luckily, my mother works completely remote, my aunt and uncle have retired, my FIL is retired, and my MIL works one week in office and then a week off. So between them all- I've been rotating my kids around. My daughter is in Pre-K, full remote, and my son is 1.5, no daycare.

ETA: We had him enrolled in his regular daycare, even paid the month of September, but I didn't feel comfortable the way they are handling it. They require masks for staff, but not for daycare kids- kindergarten. They aren't doing anything to social distance the kids, which let's be real wouldn't work anyway, and everything just seems too lax. They also have a charter school and high school on campus and I feel like they aren't doing enough to prevent any spread. So I pulled him since I won't be going back to work full time any time soon.

I know people who have signed up for private Kindergarden (Tutor Time) because their home district was on a hybrid schedule.

Of course doesn't help other grades.

I am looking to put them in daycare the 3 days that they are home during the week. It is in the building where I work and they have small class groups by grade. I thought working while they were being taught synchronously is going to work. It's fine for middle school but not for elementary.

DD is half days. We were able to enroll her in an after school program 3 days a week, but the program is in the middle school and she's in kindergarten so one of us (usually DH) picks her up and drives her there in the middle of the day (which is totally fine- we're just glad they're having the program).

The strain of all this on working parents is obscene.

As I said in the other post, I am in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I am keeping it that way so long as my boss lets me just in case we go to full remote. My child care is my family so it has somewhat resumed as normal on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This week Tuesday and Thursday are remote for my kids. My aunt is a retired teacher so she had no problem on Tuesday doing it with them. Today is my MIL so I don't know how this is going to go.

And Lucky star is right. The strain is obscene. If numbers spike, my older family members are not going to want to watch my kids. I have no idea how I would swing day care for 3 kids.

Ofcourse it was. There are so many reasons why people can‘t just do what they were doing in the summer. And if you’re a working parent you would know that. Heck even stay at home moms are feeling the difference between summer and being at school. Let’s list the reasons:

1. You were working remote and watching the children in the summer, now you are being required to go into the office

2. There were full day camps/daycare, where now, many schools are full remote or on this weird hybrid mode, which makes it very difficult to get proper childcare for.

3. During the summer your kids didn’t have any work to do. Now you are juggling your work and their schooling at the same time. On top of feeding them and taking care of them.

Not everyone has family and friends, or a standby Nanny they can call up. Many can’t even afford it. It’s also not easy to find sitters or daycares that can work with these weird schedules.

The list goes on and on, why people can’t just do what they were doing in the summer. I’m not even going through this right now and I understand this. The lack of empathy is outstanding.

SCOPE offered day care for during the day for days off in my district. Even though I work from home always I was considering having my son at least attend because he needs help and I have to work. I haven’t done it but by next month I may be changing my mind.

My DH is a teacher and does not work the summers to stay home with my kids.
I won't have to worry about the holiday breaks either but the rest of the school year is on me.

Yes, the cost of day care is horrible and paying for day care for a 10 year old is frustrating.
I am muddling through but every week is different for us bc the kids are on alternating schedules - A/B for one and A/B/C/D for my older one. She only goes in 1 time per week.
I haven't felt this stressed about childcare/working since my kids were babies.

I didn't say just do what you were doing in the summer. The reason I was asking was because daycares are now taking school aged kids and doing programs for the days there is remote learning. Once again jumping down my throat for no reason. Take it easy!

It really sucks. My school did a hybrid learning model this year. I could have put them in day care the other 3 days but the school is not doing after care on the in person days and the daycare is not allowed to do aftercare. I ended up putting my kids in Catholic school because the one near me has full days and after care until 6pm. It was our only option. If we did not do that one of us would have had to leave our full time job. This whole thing is stressful for parents of any age.

So then why didn’t you just suggest that instead of asking that dumb question. It’s obvious the original poster can’t do what she was doing over the summer, why else would she ask others for suggestions?

Twist it how you want, your one question wasn’t to try to help the OP or others. And I wasn’t jumping down your throat. I simply stated facts of the situation, since it seems like a lot of people nowadays don’t get it. You just seem annoyed because I called you out on it.
