Spin off...how do you get a state job?
I have taken several civil service tests and scored very well ( 100%) and I am not being called for any jobs. I feel as if the good paying jobs, the new hire is already pick out and the civil service tests are just a formality to make it look like they hire from the tests. I would like good health benefits and a a pension with a decent salary...I know...everyone wants that.

Can I ask which tests you’ve taken? I’ve been thinking of taking some tests for a change in career but I get kinda confused on the website to which ones are for what

They were county jobs...I took a personnel anaylist exam, business manager (1 &2) and Finance Anaylist.

They definitely hire from the tests. I took quite a few tests. Some I got canvassed for, others I never heard. I work for the county now and was hired almost 5 years after taking the test. It really depends on what the job is and how many positions there are. They need to keep their eligible lists updated, even if positions do no not become available...

I know for civil service jobs they definitely hire from the list, and it's very strictly enforced. You should get canvas letters that you need to respond to. If you don't respond to a certain number, then you're removed from the list. When a position opens, they go down the list and send out the letters to every one with a top score. They keep going down the scores until they have a least a certain number of candidates who are interested, then they stop canvasing and need to hire one of those. You can only hire a certain person, if you can reach them on the list.

I found a posting on indeed and then went to the website and applied. I was called a few days later for an interview and scheduled for a second interview at the end of the first interview. Got letters of recommendation for my file, negotiated salary and it was done. Took about 6 weeks from application to hire.
I definitely didn’t take a test.

Yeah it's different for county I think. I know for county jobs you take a civil service test.

Depends, state jobs just aren’t civil service. Example- stony brook hospital has state and civil service- different unions, then there are the schools, most of those positions aren’t civil service, then there’s smaller bodies such as OMH and OPWDD which most are civil service. Then there is the railroad/ FDNY/ NYPD. The civil service they strictly go by grade, date, etc. keep taking them as positions open, and it can take a few years
